"Highland hasn’t changed…it never does.”

At first, they didn’t notice.

They came to Highland for the same reason as the others: a stroke of luck, riding high on the prospect of potential prosperity. The clean-cut lifestyle of the town was a welcome change from the grit of the West, a ruthless engine that tended to chew drifters up and spit them out. Somehow they’d landed here, given an opportunity to build a life they’d never had before.

Highland did not come without its quirks. The township’s noticeable lack of crime was strange for the area, but could be attributed to the stiffnecked sheriff and his militia of deputies. The townspeople themselves were nice, albeit distant. Not very engaging, but they’d seen pricklier sorts. The curfew was one of the things most griped about, the sheriff’s strict admonition about not staying out after dark the one thing that bothered the newcomers. The cracks in the town’s perfect visage were there, just barely on the surface. They chose not to look harder than was necessary.

Until trouble came looking for them.

There was a shot in the dead of night. Mere hours upon their arrival, they found the sheriff sprawled on the floor of his own home, life trickling out of him from a gunshot wound in the head. A pistol rested in one lifeless hand. A crumpled piece of paper was clutched in another. The note was brief but the barely legible scrawl screamed with undeniable urgency:

Your days are numbered. We are many.

That night, Highland changed.

Rules:

1. GM word is law.
2. Practice basic role-playing etiquette. This means no godmodding, powerplaying, etc.
3. Don't be an asshole. If you're experiencing issues with fellow role-players, take it up with the GMs so we can figure out a solution. Don't incite drama.
4. Post at least once every two weeks. Let us know ahead of time if you'll be unable to post or dropping out.
5. This is an adept role-play, so we're going to require more than just one-liners, but we don't expect novel-length posts either. Just keep it straightforward and give enough material that others can respond to.
6. No OOCs in any of the threads unless explicitly stated. There is a Discord server dedicated to OOC chatter.
7. Only post in the IC thread if your character sheet(s) have already been approved. If you ever edit your character sheet in the future, it will need to be approved again, so let us know.
8. Make sure your codes are mobile friendly, or provide a plain text version.
9. Don't post WIPs or reserve posts. Post a completed character sheet or don't post at all.
10. Face-claims are required. Art pictures only!

Name: Frank and Charlotte Peters

Age: 25 and 20 respectively

Summary: Frank had been the only son of a hard working man in Virginia. Their town was booming from the discovery of a seemingly endless vein of coal that ran through the nearby mountains. Most of the men in town worked for the mine, and many of them died that way too. Their mother had succumbed to a horrible cough that went through the town and claimed many lives. Their father seemed unwilling to accept her death and instead of taking comfort in his remaining family turned to the bottle and working insane hours. In his muddled state he made a grave error in the mine and caused a cave in that cost the lives of thirty men. Once the investigation placed blame on their father, life in the small town became unbearable for Frank and Charlotte.

Frank came upon an advertisement for an opportunity to start anew, with a promise of land and work. He presented the idea to his sister and both agreed to make their way and cast their future fortunes in the hope of the west and the promise of unlimited potential. The two young people arrived in town with a wagon full of everything their parents had amassed and with a fair amount of goods they'd purchased for the long journey. They'd been fortunate and frugal during their trip and arrived with something of a miraculous surplus of goods. Whether the two had purchased too much in their inexperience, or whether they'd garnered some goods along the way in other methods, remained to be seen.

Appearance: Frank Peters.jpg Charlotte Peters.jpg

Charlotte is a skilled seamstress and cook. She loves to read, and forced frank to bring along many of her favorites. Though she is ladylike in appearance, she is strong from tending to their family garden, that greatly added to their dietary needs. She is practical and no nonsense and is protective of her brother, especially where is lack of schooling is concerned. She feels he sacrificed that part of his life so that she did not have to and will not allow anyone to make him feel inferior because of that choice.

Frank is strong and willing to work hard, and has both farming and coal mining experience. When their mother had passed and their father had taken to hiding in the bottle, he'd stopped attending school to work and provide a consistent wage for their small family. He's a decent shot though far from a marksman. He is fiercely protective of his sister since she's the only family he has left.

Name: Jericho "Falcon's Claw"

Age:
34

Summary:
Jericho was born as the son of a Comanche chieftain in the northern plains of Spanish occupied Texas. He was kidnapped in 1850 at the age of five by white cavalrymen and sold him into the auspices of Southern slavery. He was purchased by a wealthy plantation owner in South Carolina who thought it novel to own a "little Injun boy" for his plantation. Jericho was taken in by a kindly old black man named Moises Bambara who raised the boy as if he were his own. Moises was a strong religious slave who named Jericho after the city in one of his favorite Bible stories. Unbeknownst to the plantation owner, he was also quite literate and also taught young Jericho to read and write. One night in 1863, at the height of the great American Civil War, Jericho witnessed Moises being savagely beaten by the plantation owner after discovering that the old slave was indeed literate. In a fit of rage Jericho attacked the plantation owner, savagely breaking his neck in the process. Knowing that if he didn't run, the plantation hands would surely execute him for the murder, even though he was only trying to protect his mentor. Jericho tried desperately to take Moises with him, but the old man was already to weak from the beating. He ordered Jericho to go on without him, lest he be killed. In tearful reluctance, Jericho leaves his mentor behind as he escapes into the night...however he vowed vengeance, swearing to return one day and burn the plantation to the ground.

After wandering awhile, Jericho fell in with a band of outlaws who recognized raw potential in the teen. For the next six years he rode with the outlaw gang who taught him the lay of the land, to be self sufficient and resourceful as well as becoming quite proficient with a firearm. In 1869, Jericho decided to leave the gang in order to retrace his roots and discover where he really came from. He sets out to discover his lineage and after a year of searching, reunites with his old tribe and his biological father. Over the next nine years, Jericho reconnects his with Comanche roots and learns the ways of a warrior, becoming an accomplished Comanche Brave. Jericho feels he is finally ready, both physically and mentally to fulfill his oath of vengeance and return to his old plantation in order to destroy it. Jericho's father warns his son not to follow the path of revenge but nevertheless gives him a blessing before he passes on. A few days after his father dies, Jericho mounts up and leave his tribe in order to discover what his destiny truly is. In his travels back to the east, Jericho is poised to pass right through a little mining town called Highland...

Appearance: old.jpg old 2.jpg

Other: Jeri stands about 6'2, speaks as a modern day cowboy of the time, in a rough western type dialect and is a crack shot with a pistol. He is also an expert tracker due to his training as a Comanche Brave.

Name: Jorge Esteban Villacruz del Rios

Age: 37 years of age
Summary: Jorge was born along the Pacific coast of the northernmost parts of Mexico in 1842, when the territory still reached as far north as the redwood forests. He was all of four years old when the United States fought Mexico, and two years later, the loss of both father and way of life at the end of the conflict with the surrender of California and other territories to the Americans was a lot for a six year old to bear. A resentment grew in his heart, for the del Rios had been powerful and influential under the Mexican government, and even at his young age, he understood that things had changed because of his new oppressors.

Jorge harbored that resentment the rest of his life, eschewing any form of legal lifestyle beneath the American government that he could manage. Beginning as a troublemaker before he turned 14, Jorge fell in with the Bandidos Guapos, raiding and thieving from any American establishment that they might. It lasted for years, their knowledge of the California wilderness serving them well through many an attempt at capture, and Jorge earned enough infamy to be given a $200 bounty.

But all good things must come to an end, and US Marshals managed to track down and kill or capture Jorge’s entire crew, save for himself. He rode east, fleeing the law, and only recently has come to Highland in Utah. Unsure whether he should progress further or remain, the criminal is holed up in the West Inn, living off the meager $40 he managed to bring with him.

Appearance: A strapping man of perhaps 5’10”, Jorge is a dark man, his skin tanned with years in the sun. He wears his hair long, finding little reason to cut it in the American style, and he wears a ragged goatee. A pistol on either hip, with the capability to shoot equally well from either, Jorge wears a charm on a leather cord around his neck, a memory of his family in the form of his mother’s wedding necklace.

Other: Jorge is a sarcastic man, coming across as rough and often brash in a manner that binds people together rather than pushes them away. Though he would not do well in the slightest in more formal settings, he fits in well in the western cultures.

Name: Father Laurence McCarthy
Age: 34
Summary: Born in 1845, Laurence Patrick McCarthy grew up the third son of a Catholic stone-mason in Dublin, Ireland. From a young age he had a special devotion to the Church, and as the fourth child (out of seven!) he stood to inherit little in the family business, so the day he announced his interest in discerning priesthood was inevitable. After the usual process with Archbishop Cullen (now Cardinal-Archbishop!), he entered studies at All Hallow's College, being ordained to the subdiaconate in 1870, diaconate in 1871, and finally priesthood in 1873. He was then dispatched as a missionary to the United States, ministering primarily in Baltimore and its suburbs, until finally a letter came. The Mission of St Michael in the new territory of Utah was in need of a new priest to help the aging Father Thompson. Archbishop Gibbons volunteered the young Father McCarthy, who arranged to travel with a group of Catholic families headed for the same place. He arrived to find Father Thompson had already passed, and took on his new role without missing a beat.

Appearance: Despite how hot it must feel under his black cassock in the American sun, Father McCarthy carries himself with a vigor befitting his age and belying his piety. He is rarely seen without his broad-brimmed saturno when outside, only wearing his biretta for Holy Mass. He traveled to Highland with two valises, one containing his Mass kit (chalice, bread and wine, linens, etc), the other containing his other cassock, vestments (two reversible sets), and books (Breviary, Missal, Bible, and the two least lurid pulp novels he could find). His altar stone was carried in his wagon separately and is currently set up in a house-chapel until a proper church can be constructed.

Other: Has a certain disdain for ragtime and opera, seeing them as two different kinds of profanity: one vulgar, the other ostentatious. However, he did pick up a harmonica before setting out west, and can sometimes be found practicing hymns or Irish folk tunes on it. He is fluent in English, but still has a strong Irish lilt whether in English or Latin.

Lincoln Lavern Hunsucker
Lincoln Hunsucker stands tall with a broad chest and devilish smile. He has eyes that could be confused for grey if you didnt look closely at the green. He is a muscled man with a dangerous edge to his walk if any should get in his way. A tattoo on is chest of the initials 'M-G'. His hair is typically worn long and sometimes tied back. His facial hair differs as he so likes but often he's clean shaven. His clothing is often a simple combination of trousers, a hubbard shirt, boots and a duster. On his hips he carries two Remington Model 1858s and on his belt a short dagger like knife.
Age: Born January 8th, 1843
Height: 6'0
Weight: 180lbs
Personality: Lincoln is not a complicated man but he is not easily read. He is a kind man but has a hard time expressing it in anything except the occasional kind act. However his kindness runs deep, he would do anything for the people he cares about. Lincoln is easily drawn in by women and spends his nights with them as often as possible. With the years he spent earning his name coupled with the years he spent in the war he developed a certain mindset. He finds ways to rationalize his actions so he is not often morally troubled.
Occupation: Professional Gunslinger and Bounty Hunter

History: Born in 1841 on a small tobacco farm in what was to become Maning, South Carolina. Lincoln's was a family of chaos. During his birth his mother passed from complications, hours after he was born his eldest brother was shot and killed. His father, Victor Hunsucker, was a man with a big reputation. He was known in the town of Manning as the most dangerous and biggest man around. He'd once killed 10 men in a bar starting with nothing but his bare hands. His misspent youth gained him some wealth which he saw put into future endeavors. Victor owned a small tobacco farm and a small boating company in Charleston, South Carolina. He operated both in part with some few slaves. With no mother to influence him Lincoln grew up tough and idolized his father with some restraint. He understood his father's complexities, while he wasnt a good man he wasnt a bad one either. Lincoln grew up with two brothers from the same mother and two half brothers in Charleston, South Carolina. Victor traveled between the two cities occasionally to check on his different families. The boys also inherited bits of their fathers looks, all turning out quite attractive. Morris being the biggest of them all followed by Allen the middle one and most attractive. Lincoln was the runt for some time, being younger than his two brothers by three and five years. The boys all grew up with their father's teaching engrained in their heads, embedding in them with work ethic and the edge required for ending a life. The boys' father wanted them to stay away from the life he had once led and urged them to find better ways to spend their time than causing trouble. However the boys found trouble with keeping his rules, Lincoln in particular. The young man had grown up hearing of his father's youth and tales of gunslingers in the west. He grew up practicing with rifles and his father's pistol whenever he could.

When the Civil War struck it was the Confederacy that called upon the Hunsuckers to fight. The young able bodied men went forth to do what they were required to do. Though he knew the implications of the war he knew the severe price of desertion and of the cruelty of the north. He and his brother Allen were moved into the 2nd Palmetto Regiment, when he was 20 years old. A year into the war the brothers fought at the Seven Days Battle in Richmond, Virginia. The battle began when Major General McClellan moved his artillery inland and incited General Lee to attack, provoking a bloody chase. Allen was wounded early into the fighting and in the fray Lincoln grabbed his brothers sidearm while drawing his own. Lincoln earned his nickname of 'The South Carolina Kid' when the bluebacks began retreating. Through the battlefield all that could be heard was an unrelenting volley of shots accompanied by the screaming of an 18 year old boy charging madly towards union lines. Rumor spread that he had killed over 50 men in the few hours they'd spent fighting before nightfall. The next day the brothers fought again and under General Lee the Confederate forces saw no capture by their enemy. After the battle finished they returned to a basecamp where parted with Allen for the first time. Quickly reunited however as the 2nd Palmetto was called to fight again. Lincoln survived the two invasions of the north without scratch while Allen was sent home healing from shrapnel wounds received during the second. Just a week later the 2nd Palmetto was sent to Gettysburg to defend against the Union invasion. After severe losses they were forced to flee. During their winter retreat from Gettysburg after the second invasion his chain of command removed of 3 men and the troops that remained were entrenched where they could hold themselves off. Many lay dead and Lincoln collected the rounds that he could. He even stuffed an extra pair of pistols into his boots. The Yankees came and his regiment repulsed them after brutal fighting, then they came and the 2nd repulsed them once more. Eventually before a final wave could come the 1st South Carolina regiment arrived to flank the bluebacks. After the end of the war he found his way to Puerto Rico where he met a woman. Her name was Maria Guerera and she brought out the criminal in him better than any women he'd encountered before. She was a fiery woman with a dangerous inclination to violence. He learned Spanish while spending evenings by her side with tequila and the spoils of their crime. But after a time he robbed the wrong people, a tavern in ties with a gang of booze runners. The gang took none to kindly and Lincoln was chased from the city eventually returning to the United States.

During his time in the US he travelled West to make manifest his destiny. He wandered till he found Golden City, a frontier town with plenty to offer a young man adding to his fame. On the first night of his second month in Golden City Lincoln mouthed off in a bar about how talented he was with his pistols and a fellow duelist overheard. The duelist came to Lincoln's humble outshack in the night wearing a dirty 2 piece suit with a brown bandana across his face. The man's skin was a different hue of tan than any in these parts and spoke with an accent Lincoln had never heard before. He introduced himself as Monsieur Mephis T. O'Fellis, a gunfighter in search of legends to defeat. He promised Lincoln a sizable reward to challenge him the next day at the center of town. The foolhardy young duelist had already proven himself but would gladly have accepted the mans offer then and there purely for the contest. Monsier O'Fellis knew full well the promise of coin had been the only thing that halted Lincoln's already twitching trigger finger. With a tip of a non existent hat the strange man turned to walk away then like that was gone in the night. The duel was to take place at noon the following day. Lincoln spent the night with a smile on his face but as he approached the city square the next day he felt dread creeping in him. He wore his pistols on his hips and stood waiting for Monsieur O'Fellis to show up in the center of town. But the man never showed. Leaving Lincoln with an ever present desire to test his skill and find this Mephis T. O'Fellis.

Other: Lincoln is a loyal man and will work tirelessly to complete his task whatever it may be. He is often compassionate to others and has a general empathy for the plight of man. He does have a tendency to maintain an off putting demeanor to distract from his business. After having grown up around a number of people in chains he chooses not to discriminate. He's easily summarized as a talented Marksman who's quick slinger in poker or life. If you didnt guess yet he speaky da Spanglish.
