Jianru Wan
The invasion of the firenation a hundred years ago was a horror to many, but a chance for the Wan family. As one of the first tribes that was colonised Jianru doesn't know any better than that his family was from the firenation. The bending in their family said so, after all. There was only fire, no earth, unlike his grandparents once claimed to be in their blood. As such the stories of his ancestors remained what they were, stories. There was no need to dwell on them anyway, as his family had long since discarded their supposed identity and sworn loyalty to the firenation as soon as they entered.

Today the Wan family oversees one of the colonies, having worked themselves up into a position of respect and honour. A century past and the believe that the firenation would fall had long since faded. To Jianru this was of no matter, as he had much bigger concerns to deal with. Born with the power to bend fire, the boy was immediately set out to train from a young age, showing considerable talents in martial arts. It all led to a strict grooming in which he was expected to elevate their family status even higher.

However, there was a detail that was often overseen, and ignored. Jianru was absolutely terrified of the fire that came from his breath and palms. The terror he felt whenever a flame was summoned blocked his ability, but also prevented the bending in overall. No one understood where the phobia came from. After all, his family had been good to him, and no significant trauma was known from his childhood. Yet, the male couldn't produce a flame without paling up, or losing control over it. His family tried a great deal of treatments to help him get rid of his fear. Exposure, meditation, hypnosis... They helped, but none actually got rid of the fear within.

Ultimately their best solution was experience and age. As Jianru grew up and learnt control his fire was less wild. There was still discomfort in the use of his fire, but it didn't feed on his fear and grow rampant as it did before. While the male is still afraid of bending, and as such chooses to hide this part of him, he has grown comfortable in other talents.

True to a man from the firenation Jianru is trained in the art of war, both strategically, as well as physically. His specialties lies in infiltration and intelligence gathering with his subtle charm and adaptive mind, though he knows how to wield a weapon on his own. Posing himself off as a non-bender he was recruited to be part of a secret organisation within the firenation in case the worst was to happen. If the firenation, as they know it, were to fall, he was to come in action amongst the rest to reclaim the throne of the firelord. A mission that Jianru never expected to come to start until the war suddenly came to an end after a century.

Hinata was born in the village of Shamsmura, not more than a couple of hours walk from Ba Sing Se. It wasn't a very large village, known mostly for its rice fields. What many didn't know was that it also secretly trained youngsters in earth bending, martial arts, swordplay and archery. They were in fact underground rebels who wished to overthrow the now corrupt Dai Li and whom they perceived as a rather useless king.

As for Hinata, she wasn't actually trained for any such thing. She was the seventh of twelve children, growing up in a family of farmers who worked in the rice fields. It was a busy life filled with hard work, but it was the norm and there was no lack of company when you lived with so many siblings. In fact, even at a young age Hinata would head to her eldest brother's forge for some peace and quiet. He was the village blacksmith, even though it wasn't what their parents had wished for him. Hinata wasn't allowed to apprentice under her older brother, so she worked in the fields like the rest of her siblings. Whilst there, she realized that there she barely needed any effort in moving any obstructing soil or rocks out of the way. Her curiosity led her discovering that she could easily move dirt, sand, rocks and dust without actually using her hands. Her parents did not find out until one day when she forcefully used her earth-bending to push away a large boulder that had rolled down a hill and crashed into the wall of their house.

Whilst stubborn, her parents seemed to realize now that perhaps Hinata's future wasn't in farming. However, they kept this bending a secret, not wishing for her to get caught up with the rebel trainers. She would spend her days instead learning how to use this power she had with an older earth-bender in the village, Shahir, a family friend who could be trusted. Along with those lessons, she also started learning how to use a multitude of weapons with her older brother, though the ones she liked to use the most was a one-edged sword sword and a bow. It was at his smithy where that she learned to forge her own sword.

Once she was old enough, about eighteen years or so, Hinata decided it was time to actually start putting all she had learned into practice. Her parents were most opposing as was her teacher, but she was always a stubborn sort of girl. When it was clear she wouldn't be getting their permission, Hinata packed her bare necessities, 'borrowed' money from her siblings and headed out in the dead of the night.

She was only there for a couple of days when the siege took place, rather by surprise. While it turned out she didn't do any attacking, she decided to use her power as well as common sense in keeping people safe, especially the lower class citizens in the Lower Ring of the grand city. This was an affair that took quite a while, until eventually a month passed when Hinata even thought of returning home. Something kept her from doing so, however, and so aside from some letters, she remained for the time being in the Capital of the Earth Kingdom.

Norbu Ngawang
Norbu's beginning was humble. Without even a name she was left in front of a monastery in the Earth kingdom. Some assumed that she was an orphan, a victim of the war. Others believed that she was born out of the horrors of the war. Whatever the case, the peers outside of the monastery all said that she was born from a rock because of her unknown origins. A tease she minded a lot.

Sometimes the girl would make up tall stories about her parents. They were rebels killed by the firelord himself, unnamed heroes of the war. She was born a noble, but her family was executed when the firenation reached her birthplace. Norbu even went as far as to observe the mannerisms of nobility, so that she could copy them for herself and give more ground to her stories. These who grew up with her knew they weren't true. These who just met Norbu would eventually find out.

Vain and materialistic the girl thus grew up wishing for all the riches she didn't have. The monks taught her to be humble, and she knew how to play the part. However, her heart was selfish, and so her actions. Believing the bending that her teachers taught her to be too passive, Norbu taught herself to be more aggressive. There was a name to gain, a war to win, and Norbu wants it all.

When the girl turned old enough to depart the monastery she left, only taking the name of the place with her. Nowadays she travels around the world, hoping to find her chance to shine. She wanted the people to sing stories of an elegant young lady, bending the earth to her will. However, the war soon came to its end and the Avatar had stolen the glory she sought. She had to find another way to leave behind a legacy of her own.

Fire Nation

It was 26 years ago when through unknown circumstances during the solstice the spirit of a long forgotten phoenix escaped the spirit world and found itself in the world of humans. Unsure of how long it could stay and unwilling to return right away, the spirit realized it needed a vessel to stay in.

Importance-of-Phoenix.jpg

A good eight months later a baby was born to a young earth nation woman, in a village near the edge of the fire nation. Unfortunately this meant that the village was doomed to be attacked, and not a month or two later it was razed to the ground, suspected of rebellion. The mother had died and so would the child had the fire soldier not seen fire held in the hands of the baby, with no burn marks to behold. The captain of the unit decided to spare the child; the impression was that the child had probably been kidnapped from the fire nation to begin with. Since there was no one claiming to have lost a child that they knew of, the captain decided to leave the baby with his aunt and uncle, an older and kind couple who had always wished for children yet never had any of their own.

They names the baby Chani and took care of her with much love and dedication, though it had taken a while to get used to her random fire-bending. As she grew up, she was taught how to use her power, so it was something rather comfortable to do; in fact most in the village seemed to feel she was a prodigy with how adept she was at using her power. For Chani, if felt more natural than anything else. It didn't seem like she had to put any effort into it.

When she was old enough, she joined the fire army and headed in the direction of the earth kingdom. This was the first time she had been there since she had been taken away. It was an honour to be part of the army, but there was a part of her that seemed to disagree with what the Fire Lord Ozai had ordered for them. Seeing helpless innocents run away, seeing the innocents of both fire nation and earth kingdom, seeing how everyone was really the same… all this caused an inner fire in Chani to burn like none other before.

When the war finally finished, it was a relief for woman. She had been hoping to meet the avatar himself, but circumstances made it so that she was delayed. She returned to her parents house for a while before deciding to head to the Earth Kingdom and help restore whatever little she could. This would also be an opportunity to see the world.
