Dragon Age: The Sixth Blight

Arrahel the White
The elf was very surprised when the Queen of Ferelden called him a friend. The pair had only interacted briefly a handful of times before, most of which they never directly spoke to one another. The first had been when the royal family had decided to see the Ferelden Circle and the living conditions therein for themselves, the two children speaking briefly but not much else occurring. Otherwise, they had the occasional interaction during his time as a Grey Warden apprentice and once when he had been made a Senior Warden shortly after a rather explosive incident regarding the Denerim alienage that might have gotten him exiled were he not acting on Grey Warden business. But, still, he was not one to look a gift horse in the mouth and was elated to know that he had their support.

Glancing at his fellows for a moment before paying full heed to the queen, speaking kindly. "You are most generous, Your Majesty. However, I believe it would be far more prudent to skip the formalities and begin discussing a plan. After all, I have been rather… occupied for the past three years."

"Of course, of course. You're not wrong, Arrahel. We have much to discuss. Thedas is in a terrible state as it is. Please, come this way."

Queen Alexandra led her patrons down a corridor towards Landsmeet Hall. The corridor was decorated with natural sun and an adequate amount of intricate portraits of Alexandra's distant relatives and immediate family hanging on the walls. Landsmeet Hall was large and rather quiet for the afternoon. A few guards stood here and there, however, overall the hall was peace in itself. A beautiful blue carpet decorated with gold trimmings centered on the floor and Queen Alexandra's banner were raised high and true.

"Please, make yourselves at home. There's plenty of room for everyone."

Setting his own polearm and the affixed Grey Warden heraldry against a nearby wall, Arrahel looked around the room for a moment, the palace still frozen as it was when he had last visited so long ago. But, of course, now was not the time to reminisce- now was the time for action. Luxury could wait for another time and another place. Dropping his pack and his shield beside his polearm for the time being (although keeping a rather tight grip on his staff), the Warden-Commander quickly moved to stand beside the queen once more, cautiously eager to begin the proceedings as his baritone echoed throughout the great hall.

"Your hospitality is most warming, Your Highness. Still, we should trim the fat as soon as possible and discuss Ferelden's defenses, as well as where the rest of the world stands. If any nation has fallen to the darkspawn then I fear this Blight will be among one of the longest ever seen."

"Ferelden is holding their forts up rather well, much to my surprise. The darkspawn are relentless demons, nevertheless. We've had a few scattered groups of darkspawn on occasion. The most recent one was a few days ago down at The Crown and Lion in Amaranthine. The guards keep an eye on the alleyways, back roads, and open roads at all the time so that they can be there to serve when the innocent cannot serve themselves. It's worse in the far west of Orlais and Tevinter though."

"I see…" Arrahel scratched at his chin, crossing his arms afterward. "It looks like our first stop, then, will be by Amaranthine Keep to resupply and check on the Crown and Lion. After that, we'll probably start reaffirming allegiances and make our path to Orlais. What say you, my friends?" The Warden-Commander then looked over to his adventuring companions and Grey Warden neophytes, anticipating their inputs.

~~Septimus~~

At the very least the city was not huge and there wasn't too much to see, nothing that really interested Septimus anyway. He trudged along with chin high and that banner raised high in the air as they essentially marched towards the Hall. Ferelden in itself was an interesting enough region and Denerim was the centre of it all, however, as it stood now was not the time to enjoy the sights and so Septimus restrained his inner adventurer and followed along the set path. Even after being told to make himself at home he remained steadfast in holding the banner sticking to the back of the group.

Commander did his duty and before too long the situation was a bit more clear to them, or as clear as the Queen would make it out to be. Surely she wouldn't lie about the state of her nation just to withhold information from other regions. Surely this Ferelden didn't have the keen mind of a 'Vint or Orlesian and thought about everything through a lens of politics and military strategy. It must have been Sep's own internal voice, earned from being raised to think that way in a world where one wasn't safe even in their dreams. For the sake of others, he kept his cynicism to himself, after all this wasn't Tevinter and he couldn't say for certain that anything bad was going on.

Once the plan was revealed to them and the Commander asked the group for input Septimus simply shrugged. He wasn't the one for military strategy when fighting an endless army. Now if they needed to catch a demon in an urban environment, that he could help with. Regardless he did say something as it was expected of him to try and speak up. "If the situation out west is as bad as the Queen says perhaps we should let Ferelden take care of itself and have the resources from the keep meet us as we travel on. Someone with a message could get there and send a cart to reach us before we get to Orlais." He shrugged again, it wasn't his area of expertise and he didn't want to argue beyond simply mentioning it as an idea.

Above and Beyond
collab between oskar @Dipper & kahra @Kat

The Landsmeet Hall felt rather strange without the hustle and bustle of many. Kahra could not pinpoint why, however, she suspected it had to do with her previous encounter with the King who once ruled. Her sister and their friends were devastated when she'd been taken away by his men for the assassination of a renowned noble who was a fool, in every sense of the way. Queen Alexandra was lucky to not deal with such atrocities, only the oncoming dread and plague of the blight. She was a strong woman though, and with the King in a much better place now, there was no doubt Denerim could continue to hold up their fort as much as they have, at least until Arrahel gathered as many forces as he could to help combat the darkspawn and the archdemon.

"I agree with Arrahel. We need all the supplies we can carry. We have a long journey ahead of us and we must make certain that the city is safe for a while longer."

Truth be told, Kahra did not care for the city or most people, aside from the alienage. If anything, she would've much rather gotten everyone from the alienage out, and allowed the darkspawn to take over every noble and human peasant that walked on her kind's backs and made fun in destroying their last bits of self-esteem, not that any of them really succeeded. The alienage, despite their circumstances, was one of the most jolly places Kahra could recall, aside from the day she was sold to a wealthy lord to be his slave and personal attendant.

"Please excuse me. I'll be in the market, should anyone need me."

Kahra left the room promptly and headed off to her home, or perhaps, what may have been left of it since she last saw them. It was still a complete shock that her sister had married and had a child. She didn't even know if they were still around after the surprise celebration that was brief, but overwhelming. Perhaps if she stepped to the side and removed her armor, she would not be noticeable to the public.

There was a disparity between the noble halls the Wardens had been invited into, and Denerim's dirty streets. At the very least the marketplace was easy on the eyes, but it was not the wares of the city's weary-eyed populace. It was Kahra, whose strange encounter earlier still lingered in his mind, and whose missing presence was immediately noticed. Oskar offered nothing more than a wave of his hand to his fellow Wardens before trailing after her.

Following her encounter she'd been just a little quieter, a bit more distant. Thoughtful? Had the child who'd come to greet her truly left such an impression? Eager as he was to have his many questions answered, Oskar kept his mouth shut about it when he first strode up alongside her. Perhaps something less personal.

"Getting stuffy for you too? Royalty'll do that, won't it?"

Kahra glanced up at Oskar's voice, not surprised he'd decided to follow her. She walked over to a few baskets of fruit and examined an apple.

"The Queen gets on my nerves, I won't lie. She has quite a bit of work to do before she gets in my good graces," Kahra responded and pulled out a few bits for the merchant.

Oskar chuckled. "I'll be more than happy when we move on. Then again... our good Warden Commander seems to like her well enough." He was lucky to have found a companion who didn't revere every authority figure who came their way. "In any case, I... came here to ask you something. Nothing serious, I promise."

Kahra raised a brow.

"Bout the kid. When we first arrived, I was wondering… You have family here? In Denerim? Hey, maybe not the kid. But family."

A sigh left her and she took a large bite of her apple, legs carrying her down the cobblestone road. "I don't know if I'd consider them family anymore. My sister and my mother, perhaps, but my father… I don't like the old man. That kid… She said I was her aunt. I suppose my sister married after all? I can never tell what's happening in Denerim anymore. I've lost respect for the city a long time ago."

Oskar hummed quietly at that. Must be strange to return to this place after so long, only to find out your family had grown without you there to see it. "Sounded like a nice kid. Don't tell me you're not interested in at least finding out the kid's name? A niece you never knew about... How exciting."

Kahra snorted, "It's only exciting if I feel like I want to find out. I don't."

A sudden force met her leg again and she glanced down only to find that her supposed niece clung desperately to her leg again and a huge grin spread across her face. Kahra glanced up at Oskar.

"It seems our time has shifted," she spoke and stood up straight to come face to face with her sister and her… family, Kahra assumed. She took another bite of her apple. "I thought you would've been around here. It doesn't seem that meeting of yours was too long," her sister, Tylin, approached Kahra.

"Tylin…" Kahra blinked, shocked that her sister would leave the comfort of the alienage to greet her where everyone insulted their being. "Kahra, it's been long. There's much to discuss, I promise it won't hold your mission back. Who's this fellow of yours? Would you mind if he came along too?"

"I–" Kahra glanced over at Oskar. "I'm not that savvy at invitations, however, it'd be a help if you were to stick around, just in case." There was an underlying motive, a need for her family to stay safe. No one knew what would happen next if it was just Kahra… She barely had control as it was.

"Truly?" Oskar cocked his head. "Hm. Maybe the next kid, then."

Oskar felt the mood shift almost immediately with the interruption, and he wasted no time in looking for the resemblance between the two women; was this Kahra's sister? Their brief introduction passed too quickly for Oskar to get a word in edgewise until the request that he join them was made, to which he nodded eagerly.

Why, he wasn't sure, but perhaps it was his curiosity regarding the child that drew him in. If Kahra wouldn't find out her name, then Oskar would.

"Sounds important. Be happy to lend a hand, if it gets me out of planning with the Wardens." He placed his hand on his heart and bent at the waist in a respectful half-bow directed toward Tylin. "Pleasure to meet you. Where are we going?"

"The alienage," Tylin murmured as her footsteps quickened. "I… Kahra, I know this must be sudden, but we need your help. Something's happened."

Kahra found herself picking up her pace, "What happened? Is your family okay? Slow down, Tylin! What's going on?!" She managed to catch up and grab her sister by the arm.

"Auntie, grandpa became a scary monster," Kahra's niece– whom she'd never asked the name of– spoke, her voice quivering.

"What?!" Kahra stood shellshocked. "No… That's asinine!"

"Brida!" Tylin exclaimed. "Stop talking of nonsense out in public!" She immediately turned Kahra and Oskar and stressed the situation in a hushed whisper. "I need both of you to stop whatever has come over our father, Kahra. Something awful has happened and we cannot fight it alone. We don't know how or who did this. He's some monstrosity, worse than he was before he… Well, that's for another time, but Kahra, especially you, I know you and father don't have a well standing relationship, but you must save him. Please. He's changed…"

Monster. This child was wise enough to see a monster, yet too innocent to see the demon behind it. She would need to face these things soon enough if Oskar and Kahra could not drive it away.

Oskar looked to Kahra, jaw set and lips a grim line. "A dangerous undertaking. We've only barely begun to fight Darkspawn. But demons...?" His voice grew hushed, harried. He shook his head. "I will do what I can, regardless. At the very least, do this for your family. Who knows what havoc a demon could wreak once it gains a foothold in this place."

This issue seemed... personal. Far too personal for Oskar to be involved in. This was her territory, and he would follow her lead.

"What say you, Kahra?"

"We don't know how strong this… demon is," Kahra grimaced and clenched her fists. She handed off her half bitten apple to Brida. "I'm inclined to let my father suffer, however, I cannot say no to my sister. Arrahel would be disappointed if we did not rid the area of this demon. That demon could be another source of trouble for all. Let's go!"

The duo, along with Tylin and Brida, as Kahra now knew, hurried to the alienage where they heard screaming and cries. Guards stood outside and as it were, there was no doubt there'd be many more inside. The few guards stopped Kahra and Oskar outside of the alienage, however, let Tylin and Brida pass. Kahra had no patience for them.

"Out of the way," Kahra growled and the soldiers gripped their weapons with readiness. "I'm a grey warden and this is my home. I will stand my ground and go in regardless of the dangers you present to me. Move. Come on, Oskar."

The soldiers, frightened by her presence, allowed both to pass and Kahra ran as fast as her armor—the damned metal— could allow her.

"I'm never allowing Arrahel to depict what I wear again. I can barely move as it is."

The alienage was in chaos as a demon roared from afar. She could smell the putrescent body from miles away, hulking and rotten with sharp teeth. Many people tried to keep closer to the entryway as Kahra and Oskar weaved their way through the crowd. It was formidable enough that the humans would not allow the elves to seek shelter outside of the alienage, one of the main reasons why Kahra disliked the system and the humans who ran it.

"Damn it, where's Arrahel when you need him…"

Frankly, there wasn't much in Denerim that Gwinn held dear to her heart, though she'd only been there in passing here and again. The alienage was as depressing a thing as one tended to find and the marketplace was as full of pickpockets and swindling as any other. Though she had no interest in the homes of the obscenely wealthy, she could at least admit that there was something strangely charming about the ordinary houses and shops as they passed through.

It was, however, short-lived as they had a summons to attend to. In with the luxury, the opulence that made Gwinnis's skin crawl. She felt foolish but couldn't help but feel more with each step inside that someone was going to try to cram her into a dress. She grimaced slightly and hurried her pace, trying not to fall too far behind the rest of the group.

The brief exchange between the Queen and the party was more informal than expected, even aside from Saal's rejoinder that at least drew a smile from Gwinnis even as on end as her nerves were. Though the queen bade them to take comfort, the surroundings offered Gwinnins none. She nodded stiffly in response to the conversation about preparations for the future but had little to offer on the matter of her own. Perhaps it would be different if she were speaking to them over a table with a tankard, having real banter rather than such stilted back and forth.

"If Ferelden is holding, a hand in time to keep Orlais and Tevinter from falling seems in order," it seemed something to say, to formally agree, even though she wasn't a warden and could hardly have expected the word of an exiled dwarf to bear much weight to Arrahel or Alexandra. She shot a glance in Septimus's direction.

"You head all the way here and already you might be getting a personal escort right back home from the Commander of the Grey, eh?"

Arrahel the White & Septimus
Septimus chuckled, Gwinnis sure made it sound so simple for a moment. "Been away from home for five years Mistress Dwarf, though this is hardly a type of homecoming I was hoping for I suppose it's only slightly weaker than riding back atop a dragon." He smiled rigidly, with an almost trained and forced gesture across his lips. He wasn't keen on going back just yet, but if the situation was really as bad as the Ferelden Queen says then perhaps it was inevitable and necessary.

"Commander, perhaps heading to Orlais first would be a wiser choice given that Tevinter had closed shut the borders. It is doubtful we would be able to cross them without announcing ourselves or otherwise proving who we are and simply wearing the armour seems unlikely to be enough. I would wager that the Orlesian spies have a route given that the information of unrest within the Imperium had made it out despite the border situation." Sep seemed eager to move, or rather eager to get out of this castle and out on the road, his journal needed updating as well but more than that he found that he preferred the freedom of the open road than the narrow and closed city streets, despite having grown up dashing and skulking through countless alleyways. There was something strangely liberating about seeing an open plane with nothing but grass and wildflowers in all directions.

Mostly disinterested in what else was going to happen during these talks Septimus politely excused himself and left waiting outside to catch a breath of fresh air. Or rather as fresh as a Ferelden city would allow, it looked nothing like Val Royeaux and was nowhere near Minrathous in its excess. He could smell the mixture of city smells on the wind, filthy water being dumped, mud and shit staining the back alleys. There were also nicer smells, perfumes brought by traders and herbs out on display to be sold to apothecaries and housewives, the smells of tobacco and other pungent smoking leaves. It was a city like any other despite appearances. There was even a distinct smell of demon infestation, just like back home.

"Merda..." Sep rushed back in forcing the doors open with his magic causing them to blast into the walls with a resounding crash. Guards jumped into action promptly moving to form a shield wall and cut him off from the queen and the distinguished guests as he shouted at the top of his lungs. "Commander, problems! Daemon in the city! Northeast from here!" He made no effort to push past the guards nor seem threatening in any way, startling them was an unfortunate consequence that he did not consider when rushing to warn the queen that her city is being devoured from within.

Arrahel gnashed his teeth the moment he heard the news. Reaching over to grab his pack and his shield, he called out the people that were keeping Septimus from going anywhere. "Guards, fetch lyrium from the Templars! We may need it to lure the demon away! Wardens, with me! We're going to deal with this monstrosity!" Casting a quick spell, the mage's body appeared to shimmer for a brief moment as his physical prowess increased for the time being due to the magic of the Arcane Warriors. Rushing up to Septimus, he spoke bluntly, calling out to him. "Lead the way!"

While Arrahel busied himself by gearing up, Septimus asked the nearest guard. "Northeast, several miles from here, what is the fastest way there?" Stunned and startled the guard mumbled out. "Alienage, head right around the castle and then eastward down the largest road until you see a large gate on the left." Nodding a quick thanks Septimus charged on, barely keeping pace with Arrahel, the armour slowing him down significantly. "I cannot be certain but I sense a powerful possession, what you here call an abomination." He managed through heavy breaths and panting. Best he could do was try and conserve energy by speaking less and pacing himself properly. There was no telling the kind of chaos awaited them.

"Blast it all- if it's a powerful one how did it go undetected for so long?" The Warden-Commander ran through scenario after scenario after scenario in his head before speaking up once more. "Maybe if it had some kind of concealment charm… but with an abomination to be so powerful, the demon must have had time to gain its strength from the mortal realm, and that can take years! From what it sounds like, the demon responsible…." Then it hit him, of course, it was right under their noses! Quite literally, given the height disparity. "It must be an elf! Good Maker, why didn't I think of it! Those Templar morons never actually check the Alienage, do they? I'm willing to bet that only the guards check the Alienage, which is why no one would have been able to notice a possessed elf for days, possibly years! Be ready for anything, Septimus!"

"Incaensor…" Sep gasped out while running. Tevene even had a name for a situation like this which spoke at length as to how important it was to keep an eye on magic. Though what the Commander said did make the man chuckle a bit. To expect anything was a relative statement. In the Imperium it would mean something else entirely. An elf who suffered oppression, a mage who feared the Templars, the two combined were volatile substances. How this had not happened before was a wonder. "Sloth." Septimus wagered through his teeth. It would be a perfect fit if Arrahel's assumption was correct that this had been stewing for some time. It wasn't long before they were at the gates and the smell was easily identified by even the non-magical individuals. It was also easy to tell that all those people screaming and begging, on the other hand, would only fuel the demonic rage. Out of breath Sep placed his hands on his knees and let Arrahel handle the matters with the gatekeepers.

"As soon as I go in, do not let anyone else in or out with the exception of the Templars! There is a demon on the loose! Am I understood, guardsmen?!" The two guardsmen nodded nervously letting them in Alienage before the gates shut behind them with a loud thud. Sensing a small trace of the Taint, he figured that it was Oskar and Kahra, and that they were near whatever demon this was. It didn't take long to find them, the mage calling out to them as he approached. "Kahra, Oskar! What's going on here? What do you know about this demon?" The elf wasn't exactly excited about getting into conflict so soon after they arrived, but Arrahel figured it was a better thing to get involved rather than mull about like a useless git. The demon needed to be purged.

Kahra's mouth ran dry as she observed the demon in lanky white and red flesh. That was him? She swallowed hard as sweat perspired from her forehead. Screaming and crying from her elvenkind echoed in her perfect ears, as did Arrahel's voice. A calm baritone that made her feel as though she should stand her ground instead of running from her father. She wanted to run. So very badly. She wasn't equipped to this kind of encounter. She wasn't meant to go toe to toe with… this thing… this thing that was supposedly her father.

Still, she straightened her back and kept a distance. She took it upon herself as well, to ensure that the innocents would stay calm and far away from the demon as possible. What would become of her father during the fight? Would he be gone forever? Her heart ached a bit, but she also knew that it was him, afterall, who put her through so much grief. Perhaps this envy demon possessing him meant that his days were numbered and she had to kill him for the terrible thing he'd done when she was only a mere three years old.

"Arrahel!" she called out, her tone abrupt. "My sister! Tylin!"

She looked around for the woman, but found her nowhere nor her children. Kahra tried to slow down the fierce pounding of her heart. Hopefully, her younger sister and Brida were okay and safe from this monstrosity.

"She says this demon is our father! I don't know if it's true! How can it be my father?!"

@AceSorcerer @Snowflake @Dipper

Oskar pulled up alongside Kahra, expression tight with worry. It had to be demons. His mettle as a full Warden had yet to be tested against the true Darkspawn, but against demons? He had never so much as faced a lesser Rage demon, had never so much as read up on the Maker-damned things. Discontent and concern mingled within him as Arrahel approached.

"Nothing. Other than..."

But it was personal, wasn't it? Oskar shut his mouth with such force that his teeth clicked together, frowning. The creature that wore a man's face - butchered, he supposed was the correct word - shambled, hideous and reeking of corruption and the Fade. A dreamlike quality whenever Oskar looked in the demon's direction, as if reality were warping around the edges and his eyes were having trouble adjusting to the oddness of it. His his hand dropped to rest on the pommel of his blade, awaiting orders.

"Never fought a demon before. Advice?"

~~Septimus~~

Boy that armor was slowing him down. He wasn't used to wearing anything harder than a padded jerkin and even that he preferred not to have. It was so much easier to wear regular clothes and just call upon rocks and earth to protect him. Catching his breath he moved closer to the group to face the lumbering demon trudging towards them. "Not to deny you a detailed answer, but simply put he was a mage and he made a deal with a demon." Wasting not a single moment Septimus conjured up a bolt of arcane energy between his hands and slung it towards the monster watching it disperse upon impact. With a grumble and a sigh he turned towards the group. "I've hunted demons back home along with the templars, this one is different, I advise utmost caution." He began weaving his hands and fingers into a sequence of gestures until an ember appeared in front of him, then split into multiple instances and embedded itself within everyone's weapons causing them to glow with a friendly warmth, or if used in combat combust spontaneously and ignite the opponent. "It's a weak enchantment, might not even touch the beast, apologies, enchantment is not my strong suit."

"Best we can do is hold the line until templars show up. Or if you're feeling adventurous, Oscar, you can engage the enemy yourself." With an outstretched arm he started to clench his fist brow furrowing as the very fabric of the veil was forced to bend and tear to cause the abomination's foot and leg up to his knee to become encased in ice only for the monster to break out of the icy prison without effort. Cursing under his breath he was half ready to glass the entire street but held himself back same as he did back in the forest. Instead he channeled what he had reserved of his magic and forced the ever shimmering demon to conform to his own rules and turn to stone. Again it only affected its leg, but now it was firmly stuck to the ground pinning the monster. Gazing intently he tried to clear his mind, focus on the demon to discern its intention, its purpose here in their world.

Arrahel the White
"Oskar, protect Septimus! Demons and abominations like this are naturally drawn to mages and lyrium, so he'll likely be focused on myself and Septimus! I'll try to keep as much attention on me as possible! Kahra, take this lyrium and do exactly as I say!" After tossing a rather large bottle of lyium to the rogue, Arrahel quivered for a moment as a flash of the demon's true visage flashed though his mind. A sinister chill rippled down his spine, the elf quickly his sword and shouting at the top of his lungs, a thin white aura surrounding his body as the ancient magic of the Arcane Warriors coarsed through his veins.

"Come at me, you sniveling pile of Fade-waste rubble!" Popping his neck, Arrahel charged the abomination. The creature iself sseemed elven from afar, but it's right arm and both its legs were consumed in a mass of writhing, decaying flesh. Its eyes had pitch black sclera and red irises while dark crimson muscles covered its maw and cheeks. It hair seemed to be slowly calcifying into a white substance not unlike bone as either of the mages could tell that the beast was slowly trying to merge its true form with that of its host. There seemed to be periodic ruptures and disruptions in its transformation, possibly from the host body and soul attempting to resist the demon's influence.

"Quickly, Septimus, create a chest-high ice barrier around the demon and myself! Kahra, begin to use that lyrium to etch a circle around the barrier that Septimus makes! Once that's complete, we can use the raw magical energy of the lyrium to keep the abomination trapped long enough without killing the host. Oskar, use a bot and try to hit its joints!" While he spoke, the Warden-Commander bashed at the creature with his shield and aiming for the demon's ankles and knees in order to try to immobilize it as much as possible without killing. It was a most unusual task as far as Arrahe was concerned, but a welcome one.

With teeth grinding against each other, his jaw slid back and forth, Sep could feel the taste of iron in his mouth, the downside of wasting so much mana on the spells. It was often followed by a smell of ozone, petrichor or ash depending on the spell. With such visceral taste in his mouth and Arrahel shouting orders, there really was nothing more to do but follow through with what Commander was saying. He was the one in charge here and the one responsible for taking care of people. As to why exactly saving an abomination was of benefit, Sep couldn't say.

With hands jerking back and fingers intertwining to end up crossing into a triangular shaped one against the other, he withdrew the light enchantment and petrification. He called back the little mana still left in them and with a quick jerk to the ground, he forced out icy walls around the two, just like commander had said. They were a few feet thick and chest high, as requested. They also left Sep panting and dropping to one knee. With hands shaking, he fumbled for what seemed like minutes at his belt to get his last potion and down it completely in one go. A rare situation in which the disgusting liquid actually felt refreshing.

There wasn't much time to engage her fellow Wardens in social niceties. Kahra knew for certain that her father wasn't a mage– if this putrescent existence was truly her father– and whatever idea Arrahel had involving the lyrium she now held in her hand, it wasn't going to be pretty. As Septimus built an icy wall around the demon to trap it, Kahra followed immediately afterward, encircling the demon in lyrium. Once the lyrium had been rid of, she tossed the large bottle to the side and left it to shatter.

"So I'm the hired protection, now?" Oskar scowled, skidding to a halt at Septimus's side. He'd been a fool to think Warden duties would always be glamorous or honorable or even particularly enjoyable. Still, Templars had some esteem. If guarding a mage against a more terrible fate was all you needed to do to earn that esteem, then he'd happily do it, orders or no. Oskar unsheathed his blades and stood at the mage's back protectively.

"So. How many demons does this make for you, hm?"

"I want to jokingly say a hundred, but I fear the true number is startlingly close to it. Mind you, I actively hunted them and most weren't as strange as this one, I cannot tell what its intention is at all."

He remained in his spot, for now, not doing much but being ready and prepared for anything that Arrahel might need of him, though he wasn't all that great at weakening or cursing foes. In fact, it was safe to say he effectively forgot even the basics of how to do it. That said nothing stopped him from having a more direct spell ready to go at his fingertips.

The Templar seemed to be taking their sweet time as the abomination gargled and growled. Once Kahra had called out to him, the Warden-Commander took his targe and kindly reacquainted it with the demon's face. After it was dazed, Arrahel was barely able to vault over the wall before touching his hands to the lyrium circle, closing his eyes and letting the thin aura around his body fade as he channeled the magic into the lyrium circle. Some sparks came from the cyan, crystalline liquid that surrounded the thick ice before the arcs came together above the demon's head as a sparking ward encircled the creature as it lunged towards the sparks, smoke rising from its body as it backed off, growling loudly as a sickly, verdigris fire began to surround its fingertips as it periodically struck at the fire as Arrahel rose to his feet.

"Thank the Maker it actually worked… that ward mimics the Veil, but it doesn't last forever. We have fifteen minutes at most before it shatters, meaning we need to either get the host to control their own body or the Templars need to get here with that lyrium soon if we aren't going to outright kill him."

"What is this?! What do you mean if we aren't going to outright kill him?!" Kahra exclaimed as she pulled out her daggers. "We can just kill the demon and get my father out of there!"

Arrahel went pale. She didn't know. He kept his breath for a few moments before swallowing the lump in his throats and speaking in a slightly quivering tone. "That's… that's not how this works, Kahra." The elven Warden-Commander then gave a sharp exhale, regaining his composure as the abomination continued to beat against the barrier and scream in ways that no living thing should possibly scream, shouting in a voice that should have never left the Fade.

"Kahra. Listen. Either your father lives and we exorcise the demon or they both die. There is no alternative. The Fade is weak wherever it walks; Septimus and I can try to use lyrium to pass through the Veil and into Fade in order to confront the demon possessing your father and try to kill it. It is possible to take in you and Oskar as well, but it's very dangerous. We could all die. And depending on how much of your father is left… exorcizing the demon might kill him anyway. Only you can make the decision as to whether or not we remove the demon. It is your choice and yours alone. I do not envy you, but we have no time to spare. You must make your choice before the Templars arrive."

Her lips barely moved as she tried to formulate a sentence in the midst of Arrahel's horrible, yet concise explanation. What would her sister think of her if she couldn't save their father? Would she believe her if she said they'd tried everything? A lump rose in the assassin's throat and for a time, to the others, Kahra appeared as if she felt lost and uncertain. She swallowed her pride and shook her head. There was no way she was going to allow this monster to continue eating away at her father's mind, body, and soul.

"We're going in, damn it. There's no other way. Why are we bringing us all in though? Wouldn't it be better if I go in alone? I'm quick and I can find whatever we're looking for."

"I agree, it would be better if only you risked your life for your father, unfortunately, I am going to assume that you have no clue how to enter the Fade nor what to expect there." Sep stepped forth towards the two never really taking his eyes off the demon. "I am against this plan, family or not unless a person is of great importance to the world we should do as templars do and cleanse its body and soul. You wish to risk our lives for some Alienage elf, Commander?" Septimus took his eyes off the beast for merely a second to further make his point by staring down the senior Warden. "I will follow orders, but I know a lot about demons and this one is neither your run of the mill Rage nor is it a natural possession." He returned to observing the beast trapped in its magical cage. All it would take is a few lightning strikes from above and it would be dead, no risk to anyone. "Listen to what the Commander is saying Kahra. You cannot enter without a mage and even then you might lose yourself without one at your side." With that said he moved closer to the magical barrier letting the woman make her choice. "Too bad we don't have a somniari with us." He mumbled under his breath.

"Get out of my way, Septimus!" Kahra snapped, as she pushed him off to the side as hard as she could. "You never should've come along here! I'm going in. You don't understand the things we've gone through. You are ignorant and a fool, far from a warden."

Her face was flushed and there was clearly hurt in her voice. Kahra began walking towards the open barrier, assuming it was where she was meant to enter, regardless of whether or not Arrahel, Septimus, or Oskar followed behind. She'd waited too long to stand behind for nothing.

"Enough, you fool!" Arrahel snarled, using the flat of his sword to block the woman's path before using it as a bar in front of her chest and pulling her back, refusing to allow any kicking or screaming get in the way before almost throwing the woman to the ground before the Warden-Commander was forced to sheath his sword, baring his teeth as he tried to convey the seriousness of the situation at hand.

"Listen!" The Grey Warden's tongue was sharp, calloused as in that moment the assassin would realize from the coldness in his eyes that Arrahel was very well-acquainted to dealing with horrors such as this and those far worse than it that had long accompanied the duties of a Grey Warden. "There is maybe, maybe a half-chance that we can go in and rescue your father successfully, but I won't allow it to be made when you're acting in a way that is delirious and that could get you and us killed! We may the only Wardens- the last Wardens- in all of Thedas! We can find whoever did this to him sure, but I give you this one chance to make a sound judgment before I am forced to decide for you, Kahra." Then, for a brief moment, Arrahel drew a deep breath before speaking with great gravity.

"Shall we attempt to exorcise your father from his possession, or shall we kill him and the demon now, where they stand?"

Throughout the argument, Oskar's mind whirled. Sympathy, concern, a faint trace of fear, all of them were hostile to cohesive thought and Oskar was left stranded, eyes darting between the three wardens while he struggled to do much more than stand there like a damned fool. He'd put on a brave, playful facade regarding the demon before, but now that they faced entering the fade... he wasn't so sure of himself anymore.

"It's her father," Oskar said solemnly. "Take that into account, regardless of what is chosen. I'm willing to take the risk for her sake. All of us must be at peace if we are to be Wardens, and if this is what it takes for Kahra, then we should do it."

Immediately after saying his piece, he turned to Kahra, face soft with understanding. Though he could not place himself in her shoes entirely, he felt her pain to an extent.

"It'll be alright. Whatever we do, it'll be fine. We'll figure it out."

Kahra hadn't been able to quite process the entire situation yet; she just wanted it all to be over. When Arrahel pulled her back from the barrier and tried to throw her to the side, Kahra was nimble and found her feet rooted firmly in the ground as he sheathed his sword and weighed the true gravity of the situation on her shoulders. She swallowed hard as Oskar spoke his thoughts and Kahra felt her heart be at peace for some time.

"Thank you, Oskar."

She acknowledged his presence.

"We're going in, regardless of whether or not the risk is heavy, Arrahel. Tylin has asked me to save him at all costs, to do anything I can, and I would risk this for her. We'll be fine. I know we'll be fine and Oskar does too. We've got this."

Arrahel the White
"Very well."

From that moment, it didn't take long for the Templars to arrive. The Knight-Commander, a seasoned fellow by the name of Thaddeus, walked to the side with Arrahel as he gave his orders- the Templars were to cut down any of the Wardens if they returned showing signs of possession or were not back from the Fade by morning. Arrahel figured it was more time than they needed since time passed much slower in the living world than the Fade, but he wanted to leave no room for error.

The residents of the Alienage were herded into their family homes for their own safety, with a pair of Templars assigned to guard each household in case something escaped.

In due time, everything was ready. A large font had been brought in and was placed before the abomination after the two mages made all the preparations they could in order to ensure that they would pass unfettered. Normally, Arrahel would have preferred to send for the helpf of Circle mages, but there was no time to do so. For this particular endeavor, the Wardens were on their own. With that being said, Arrahel immediately gathered the Templars would be watching the abomination's containment and their captain as well as his own Grey Wardens, going through the plan one last time.

"Listen, and listen well. In a brief moment, Septimus and I will use the raw lyrium in the font to take the four of us through the weakened Veil and into the Fade to exorcise the demon from Kahra's father. Time for us will move much faster there and gravity will be nonexistent. To say the least, will be unlike anything you've ever experienced. If anything goes wrong or if we are suspected and proven to be possessed when we return, we and Kahra's father will be executed immediately. Now, if all is understood, we shall begin."

The next thing any of the four of them could remember would be a bright flash of light and the mouthing of words by the mages as they all found themselves standing on a rock hovering in the middle of what appeared to a broken, disjoined landscape of the Alienage strewn like a wreckage around them. There were many such islands that surrounded them and one could see spirits passing through- with one especially resting in the ethereal version of the vhenadahl, glowing brightly to provide some sort of comfort in the green, noxious night that flooded the area. Apparrently friendly, the spirit waved a hand as weapons, shields, and staves that would have effect in the Fade appeared on the bodies of the Grey Wardens before the light seemed to twinkle out existence as it slid further into the ghostly tree, perhaps as a means of defending itself.

"Looks like we have a friend," Arrahel quippped with a soft smile. Getting his bearings, he turned around and looked at his junior Wardens.

"Is everyone alright? The Fade can take a heavy toll on those entering for the first time. What you're seeing know is this little piece of the Fade that's tied to both Kahra's father and the demon, as you can see from the appearance and the general lack of spirits. If we investiagte we might find some clues as to how this possession occurred in the first place, but given how powerful this demon has shown itself to me, we must move together at all times. Your thoughts, Septimus?"

Arrahel figured that his fellow mage might have noticed some key details in the environment already, or sensed something that the Warden-Commander had not. Since the elf had entered the Fade very sporadically and while he was comatose and had little agency for the most part, he was of the opinion that Septimus had likely been more active in the Fade than he had been by most metrics.

Reluctantly, Septimus agreed to help Arrahel and enter the Fade. Mostly because he wanted to ensure that the senior Warden returns. The rest were of no concern, they made their choices in spite of what he had told them, in spite of the danger that the Fade poses and in spite of what both Chantries so painfully repeat over and over again. If Oscar and Kahra got stuck then so be it, Arrahel was the only one that had to return as he was the only one that could rebuild the order. The sight of the Templars was oddly relaxing though it was clear these were not the Imperial Knights that he knew, these people had a totally different demeanour that exuded intimidation and threat. Somehow it still gave Septimus a sense of calmness to the situation. No matter what happened this demon would not get loose at least. The only issue was that maybe the only Warden that could rebuild the order could die.

One of the trickiest things about the Fade was that even though you could enter it together, getting to the other side as one could be problematic. Fade wasn't really a physical place and what ruled it was laws of thought and emotion. One stray idea and you could end up apart a few feet or even further. He instructed others not to think of anything other than Arrahel, his own assistance in the spell made it easier for the commander to serve as an anchor for the rest of the group but there was always a risk of them coming apart. Which is what happened to Septimus. He was opposed to this idea from the start and so entering the fade whatever powers ruled it clung onto his reluctance and threw him apart and aside. Most likely others' reluctance to have him follow played a part in it as well. What he saw were scenes of borderline slavery, mistreatment and abuse the likes of which not even Tevinter allowed upon their servants. To witness these scenes of the past acted and committed upon the elves forever carved into the Fade and then etched into Sep's mind. He thought he had a better idea of what it was like for Kahra, except she was nothing like he would expect. A quick glance told him he was alone, save for the spirits and well... Demons.

Luckily it was just him that was apart and he had enough stillness of mind to focus on the Commander and take a step into the unknown through what seemed to be empty air and appear out of nowhere few feet away from the group just as the Commander was finishing his instructions. Cutting in at the end Sep added. "Stay focused, don't let your mind wander because you are not here to move with your body but with your thought. Losing focus or trying to reminisce here will lead you astray. You will find yourself lost in the confines of your memories and before you know it you will be dead. If you are lost we won't be able to find you easily. Stay vigilant and if you end up apart try and focus on the Commander." Following that Septimus shot a dirty look at the Commander. He had clearly stated his thoughts earlier, this was a waste of time and effort. One elf was not worth this much risk. He closed his eyes which were really already closed as his body was asleep. Rather he shut off his senses within the Fade then expanded a sixth one that sometimes made its presence known. "I'll let you know if something dangerous comes our way."

Once they stepped into the Fade and Kahra was surrounded with a foreign atmosphere, dreadful appearance of the Alienage, but somehow peaceful at the same time. Kahra was certain she understood that she didn't have time to release any more pent up emotions from her past. Septimus was with them because he was the demon expert and she'd just have to suck it up that he did, indeed, know more about the Fade and magic than she did. She had to listen to not only Arrahel, but also Septimus, a damn Tevinter.

"I feel... different, but I'm okay. Like a feather, I mean."

Kahra's lips set out in a thin line as Septimus warned of the dangers within this alternate dimension. She didn't say anything in regards to his spiel, only nodded and looked over at Arrahel. The commander she would follow, if possible; he'd risked his life to save her and now, he was risking his life to save the bond her family once had. It frightened her for a moment, but she shook that thought away. She owed Arrahel her cooperation for once.

"Anyways, where do we begin? What can we look for that would give us clues to finding the demon?"

It did have a certain dream-like feel to it. A dream and not a dream inhabiting the same space in such a way that Oskar almost felt ill when he realized the sheer absurdity of it. He took a few shallow breaths before joining his companions, face pale but otherwise neutral. Did mages always feel like this when they ventured here...?

"So," he began, staring determinedly at the ground. "What does our demon expert have to say on this matter? Are demons at all interested in items of particular importance to their host?"

A guess was better than nothing at this rate. Oskar wasn't experienced or at all learned in this area; but he'd do what he could to help. Before anyone could respond, Oskar continued. "Home, I think, would be our best bet. Where else would a demon in living flesh hide itself?" His face brightened in a wide, pleased grin, as if he'd solved the mystery all his own before considering the input of his companions. It did seem the safest choice. Better to cross out one potential location early before they got lost in this damned place.

Arrahel the White, the Fade.
The Fade itself seemed as if was rippling, pulsating around them as they contemplated their next move. Arrahel himself nodded as the other Grey Wardens weighed in regarding their next move. Hearing the bard, a wide smile crossed the Warden-Commander's face as it seemed his clever insight had hit the nail on the head. With this luck, they wouldn't be stuck in the Fade for too long at all.

"Oskar has a point. We'd better save Kahra's home for last, and keep in close. There are likely to be some lesser demons around here that we should exterminate first before we go for the bigger target. I've seen many cases where more powerful demons will absorb and kill nearby weaker ones in order to heal themselves. And since we've basically backed this thing against the wall of its nest, we should expect it to be extremely frenzied and willing to take some rather dramatic measures. If you hear any whispering in your heads, speak up immediately. It means the main demon's especially close by and it'll try to overpower your mind. I knew a poor Tevinter mage who got himself killed that way."

Whispering something, a small wisp soon appeared hovering around Arrahel's head, after which it began to encircle the entirety of the party as Arrahel spoke up. "This is my friend, a spell wisp. I just call him Elgar. His light will serve as a beacon for us. We should all remain no farther than we can see him at any given time while we're here. With that in mind..." The elf turned his head, smirking softly. "Why don't we go knock down that house on the left, first, and see what's inside?"

It seemed that Septimus did not have much else to say on the matter, something Kahra was silently grateful for. She was done with his nonsense for now and the mere fact that he despised doing this mission into the Fade was only further evidence why he shouldn't be here. Kahra cleared her throat and acknowledged Arrahel's introduction of the spell wisp. It was a beautiful light, comforting in some way, yet it didn't shield Kahra from the uncertainty she felt walking in the unknown.

Kahra walked in silence as Arrahel led the way towards a brick home with chipped away paint and cracks at the foundation. She found herself contemplating what life would be like if everything in her childhood was perfect. If her father didn't sell her away- well, if he didn't get caught up in a fool's game and become possessed. The base of her throat ran dry as she took each step forward towards the crumbling building. The weeps and screams of her mother echoed in her perfect ear.

Kahra sucked in a breath and glanced around, finding her mother nowhere. It was just an illusion.

'Don't take my baby away.'

'She'll make a fine slave.'

She felt her skin crawl as nails dug into her shoulders and slid down her arms. Warm breath tickled her neck and she immediately turned around, heart racing and knuckles white as she held her dagger out to nothing. No one. Her head felt light, overwhelmed with all of the different voices that creeped in her subconscious. Where was her integrity? Where was her pride? She shook her head, tried to shake off the feeling, and put away her dagger. She didn't want to hurt anyone on accident. "They're talking to me," she whispered.

'You'll come with me to bed because I said so.'

'She's just a child. Please have mercy on her.'

Kahra stood caught in the moment, her mother's voice resounding like a sweet lullaby full of broken tears and joy. She wanted to see her daughter again after everything she'd been through.

'Please come back to me, Kahra. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry I couldn't protect you. Let us embrace. I want to feel your pain. Follow my voice.'

Kahra glanced over to the right. "Mother?"

'Yes, my child.'

"No, you're not real. You're dead. Go away."

They walked on and Kahra suddenly felt a sharp pain shoot up her left temple.

'You don't want to go back to those men. I know. Remember what they called you?'

'Slut. Thief. Whore.'

"Go away. I'm done with you," Kahra spoke and grit her teeth, trying everything in her power to hold back her tears and the blood boiling inside her body. Mixed emotions surfaced; confusion, dread, and anger. That sharp pain shot through her head again and she leaned forward, hands holding her forehead as pain surged through her mind.

'You're not really done with me, are you? They demonized you, Kahra. You felt unsafe. I know how it feels. Please, my love. Let us rejoice.'

'You are mine now.'

'My own toy.'

'Kahra, you don't have to suffer this way.'

"Get them out of my head," Kahra was verbally distressed as she began to back up, the voices gradually growing louder and the sharp pain growing stronger as she kneeled down to the ground, body shaking as she sought to remove the demon that so easily seemed to creep it's way into her mind. Tears began to streak down her cheek and her nails seemed to embed into her skin as she panicked and tried to figure out how to combat the demons.

"Elgar," Oskar said, lips curling into a faint smile. "Endearing. I like it!"

Although he couldn't be sure a blade would do a demon much harm, his fingers curled around the grip of the dagger at his hip as they approached the house, clenching and relaxing in anticipation. When nothing came and the door swung open harmlessly, Oskar deflated somewhat, stepping away to scout the next potential lair.

There was nothing remarkable about this place, quite the opposite of what he'd expect from a demon. Weren't they greedy as the men they inhabited? Or perhaps there was some other method to their behavior, he couldn't be sure. The mage hadn't yet spoken up and Oskar, curious man that he was, was starving for an explanation. Anything to keep his mind off of the way the sky twisted and writhed like something alive and furious. He shuddered and tore his gaze away, back toward the other wardens.

"What? Kahra?" Oskar slowed and turned back, hesitating between approaching Kahra and looking to Arrahel for guidance. "What, the demon? Can it do that?"

Oskar was unequivocally useless in this place, and his lack of expertise was serving only to heighten his frustration.

Sep followed after Oscar and gave the hut he was inspecting a second look after him. What they both missed was a creature all too eager to pray on something that Septimus harboured in his heart for a good reason. The Fade was a dangerous place, especially within the domain of a powerful demon. Rather than invade it like this they should've just killed the man and purged the demon. Alas, his advice was ignored and he had to deal with his own lack of courage about this place. Something that the thing in the corner was all too eager to leap on top and pull him into the hut slamming the doors shut behind him while Oscar began to ask questions in panic about something that was going on with Kahra.

When he turned to look at the creature it was a floating husk of a humanoid form with several feet hanging underneath it. The tattered robe covered most of its legs and its waist was adorned with a metallic sash. The chest and arms seemed undoubtedly human and corpse-like with ribs popping out of the dried off flesh and hands that ended in lock dark claws. While the lower jaw seemed humanlike the top part was some incomprehensible creature, like a union of a crab and spider with tentacles falling down. From its back, spider-like limbs or spikes were curled out and pointed at Sep and when he stared at it for too long he saw something even more horrifying behind the form it chose. It was impossible for it to take on that form and he was grateful for that. Not a moment wasted and he was raising his hands towards the demon with flames shooting out towards it. He would do what he did best and hit the enemy with everything he has until ti dies or backs off. Hopefully, he wouldn't be the one to go out first.

Arrahel the White, the Fade.
The verbal distress of their assassin followed by the unholy shrieking of the demon that had lured them into its lair immediately brought Arrahel away from his own investigation of the room, uncovering a small etherial lyrium vein. Reaching out to grab the bright blue crystal, the elven mage could feel magical energy coursing throughout his form, giving him a temporary boost to his arcane powers. With a loud growl, he caught the shrieking demon's attention as the singed figure lunged towards the apparently unarmed elf. In an immediate response, the Grey Warden pushed his arms out in front of him as arcs of white-blue lighting pushed out of his palms and fingertips. The demon clawed at the mage, hitting his armor and jostling the man up while its arachnid arms began to seize up, pulling closer towards the scrawny torso. While it didn't seem it like the man's magic was going to fell the demon, it definitely seemed to keep them in place.

"Oskar! Stab it in the neck with your blade! It can be killed with the weapons that the spirit can harm the beings of the Fade! Septimus, try and rattle Kahra into some kind of calm! Oskar and I can knock this foe down!"

~~Septimus~~

Why did things have to get out of hand so quickly? The answer was known to Sep, he knew it was gonna happen before they even entered the Fade. This place had a way of targeting one's deepest fears and regrets, the happiest memories and brightest moments. The less awakened would know none of it and simply treat it as just another place that looks weird like the jungles south of Orlais. At the very least no one was dead yet. The sad part was that despite the warnings from him and the Captain, Kahra still managed to get herself trapped in her nightmare and if they were allowed to continue the rest of them would be caught as well.

He rushed to her at the order of the Captain and grabbed her by the shoulders then shook. The things that he could try in order to break this kind of mental torture would likely result in his swift and undisputed execution so he refrained from giving those ideas any mind. Instead, he stuck to the mundane ways of reaching her, by repeatedly shaking her and shouting her name in an attempt to bring her mind back to attention. For what else would be important within the dream world but one's focus on the task at hand. It was a bad move to bring the one personally attached to the matter at hand here unprepared. Regardless of whether or not she wanted to save her father.
