History:

1789- The people of Tophet form the small town at the edge of a cliff. The people were often outcasts of religion, sexuality, ethical practice, or even had committed a criminal offense. An occasional escaped slave would settle there as well, and found that it had been a safe haven for those few who knew. The town was built up of five original leaders, who determine they should reign for life.

1791- Tophet creates their own constitution, which includes the right of access to land, right to speech, and the right to access protective means. Citizen life is defined as a member of the community who had been a previous outcast and settled the town, or had been born there.

1825- An arsonist had lit fire to Tophet’s community center, their singular bank, and the mayors’ office. It takes five years of reconstruction to rebuild.

1835 - Perhaps a town’s favorite piece of history, an African American male by the name of David Cyrus, during an eventual electrical shower, made his way into the collective mayors’ office, and overpowered all five currently in office. David Cyrus then went on to the the town’s first African American, and singular mayor. He happily and efficiently ran Tophet until 1842. There are some discrepancies to the long given legend, but this much is known, David Cyrus was twenty two years old at the time of the rebellion, and, rather than killing his rivals, he knocked them out with a wooden chair and locked them out of the office. He was voted as Tophet’s most influential figure and Tophet’s man of the year in 1843.

1896- Odd murders occur around town, including the death of three children. These cases were never solved, but had created a large tourist attraction later on for the towns history. They have a street where the bodies were found named after the newspaper’s name for the killer, Black Rose Avenue.

1915-1918 - Tophet becomes a haven for people attempting to disappear, particularly for the draft. Several young men settled, as well as sympathizers for the opposing side

1940- Tophets economy booms as more young men settle, hoping to get away from the draft. The population nearly doubled from 1,000 to 2,000.

1952 - Tophet's economy crumbles as it becomes apparent that they have been hiding from paying the state's taxes. The entire town goes bankrupt, the old families hide nearby and wait to regain their land. Tophet is officially abandoned, and in due time, the town crumbles structurally. The families give up on attempting to rebuild.

1967 - It is the summer of Love, and an intelligent man by the name of Quentin Bullock finds the abandoned town of Tophet, realizing its beauty and worth. He invites several young men and women to recreate on the seaside cliff, and Tophets location becomes popular. The families use this to regain their property.

1973 - Tophet becomes an official town and is ran, finally, by one governor.

1989 - Tophets economy hits an all time high as a small tourist towns. Mysterious drownings occur, but are quickly hushed up.

1992 - Tophets newspaper is voted the highest quality within the state. The Killigan family, who owns the paper, becomes a major influence. They are in charge for quieting important scandals and exaggerating small events.

2003 - Tophet is on the verge of becoming one of the most popular towns in the country. Rumors of the mayors affairs are covered by the Killigans, covering up the beginning of the year of the devil. In fact, the Killigans reports of the mayors affairs silenced the disappearances until the sixth victim. Fifteen children in total were reported missing, with two of the children’s cases believed to be related to separate predators. The mayors young daughter disappears, the man hunt begins, and Diablo, who was a sixty two year old resident by the name of Alfred Mendel, speaks out about the crimes. Mendel was forcefully thrown from the cliff side, contrary to Killigans report that he merely took his own life after being cornered. The case was forgotten and a memorial service for all the children was held two weeks after Mendel’s death. The burning of the paper dolls that Mendel had kept for trophies occurred before his own eyes, again, this fact hidden by Killigans newspaper. There were no charges placed against those involved in Mendel's death. The people involved in his death ranged from devastated parents to corrupt officers.

2013- Tophets businesses start booming again, despite the rumors of a serial killer having been prowling the streets years prior. In fact, one family by the name of Shapiro had gained quite a bit of money from their business of ‘Tophets Fine History!’ ‘historical center’ and their documented ‘history’ of the children’s disappearances. The new mayor is loved by all, but receives a mysterious letter that quotes “Therefore, behold, the days come, says Yahweh, that it shall no more be called Topheth, nor The valley of the son of Hinnom, but The valley of Slaughter: for they shall bury in Topheth, until there be no place [to bury]. The dead bodies of this people shall be food for the birds of the sky, and for the animals of the earth; and none shall frighten them away. Then will I cause to cease from the cities of Judah, and from the streets of Jerusalem, the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride; for the land shall become a waste”. The Killigans reported it as “A mysterious occurrence and a horrible offense to the town!” The writer was never caught

2018 - Tophet is throwing their first ever “Summer of Love.” to commentate their resurrection. It’s a tourist trap event including the Shapiro’s very own ‘murder walk’ and the Killigans very special ‘writing and how to convince people you are good at it.’ event. Weird biblical quotations have been reported over the years but have stopped this year. The vanished children are starting to return, and as expected, the town is in uproar.

Families

The Goodmans - Jeremiah Goodman was one of the main five founders of the town. The Goodman’s are far from influential in modern times, with the main Goodman being a disgrace due to her substance abuse. There are other descendants of Jeremiah Goodman, but they are more likely to stick to another name if married. The Goodman’s had more than a few rocky patches, with many of the descendants having a form of mental illness or simple addiction. Jeremiah Goodman was thought to have suffered from mild bipolar disorder.

The Sloans- The Sloans are apart of the original five founders, a husband and wife team of Sarah and Abraham Sloan who were ridiculed for their Quaker practices. The Sloans have strong family ties with the Corson’s and the Killigans, although the Corson’s and Killigans have been distanced within the family tree. Sarah Sloan’s cousin started the Corson family tree, while Abraham Sloans nephew began the Killigans. The Sloans themselves are no longer influential within the dynamic of the town. That is not to say they aren’t respected. The current family has two children and one grandchild, but there are several Sloan cousins as well. It is a saying within Tophet “Born a Sloan, died a New Yorker.” For most leave after a few years of hopeless tourism and fleeting influence.

The Rockwells - the Rockwells began with two brothers who helped establish the town. There are rumors the two of them were engaging in homosexual romances with married men in neighboring towns and were chased out. The actual truth of the matter was that the Rockwells were chased out of their town for, quote “flaunting their flesh upon the village, scarring the minds of several young boys and men.” The Rockwells have been further recorded as deviants, as well as their descendants. However, during the summer of Love, a Ginger Rockwell made a special connection with Quentin Bullock and helped rebuild the town. The Rockwells are respected because of this, and their family has several connections to the government of Tophet. During the time of Diablo, the mayor was a Silas Rockwell. He has no other children besides his missing daughter, and as far as any of the townsmen know, he vanished in 2004 after being seen crying at Tophets local pub, Black Rose. It is assumed he still resides within Tophet.

The Killigans - Loosely related to the Sloans, the Killigan family had resides quietly within the town until the Summer of Love. A mister Gregory Killigan began to write short stories and sell them around to recreational users and was happy to realize that people could find his work of fiction believable. The Killigans truly rose into status in the 1990’s as Benjamin Killigan began the Tophet Journal. He would write stories of small scandals and hide true horrors behind it all, which could include bizarre disappearances at the cliff side. The Killigans shifted in 2003 after their daughter was lost, and wrote a heavy amount of information about Diablo, begging for the citizens of Tophet to find her. After Diablos death, which Benjamin Killigan most certainly assisted in, the Tophet Journal went quiet until 2013, when Isaiah Killigan brought the business back and made money off of the troubles of Tophet. The Summer of Love has contributed to the Killigans more than once, and it is believed they will make more money in this summer than any other year. They are respected and Isaiah Killigan assists in what news is released and what news is hidden

The Shapiro’s- the Shapiro’s came to Tophet late. In the 1940’s, a small, hearty Jewish woman and her sons fled to Tophet, where they were welcomed. However, as safe as the family was, there was still a constant notice that the Shapiro’s didn’t quite belong, for they were indeed outsiders. However, in the 1990’s, Avi(his real name Israel) Shapiro made his way into the Tophet scene. He taught lectures at the United University of Tophet and was infamous for assisting in “Tophets trial of the century.” When a young man was accused of assaulting a young tourist. The Killigans covered a majority of Avi’s work, but he later assisted in freeing the man of something, Avi Shapiro truly thought he was innocent of. The rest of the Shapiro’s were criticized for the man’s actions and, while their family is one of the largest in Tophet, remained quiet. A majority of them fled from Tophet during Diablo’s reign of terror, but soon returned to make Tophets own historical society. The Shapiro’s aren’t particularly respected, but their historical center makes a good profit from tourists.

The Cyrus’s- David Cyrus, having been one of Tophets favorite mayors, had gained quite the popular within his descendants. There are a surprising amount, many of them still residing peacefully within Tophet. A few of the Cyrus’s assist with tourist attractions and a few tricks to keep their main economy up and running. When the Summer of Love kicked in, the Cyrus family once again had a mayor in place. Tophets residents constantly joke that another Cyrus candidate would ascend them into pure prosperity.

The Bullocks- Before the main family is explained, it is very well known that Quentin Bullock was not faithful to his wife and had multiple illegitimate children. Some of his children spread into the smaller families, but it is not well known whose child he had helped father. His well known family is small, influential, and quite the treasure of Tophet. The Killigans were quite close to the Bullocks, as were the Rockwells and, surprisingly, the Shapiro’s. The Bullocks have information on a majority of families and use it to their advantage. The main family consists of a son and several, several cousins. They own the Black Rose, as well as having a Bullock currently in office as mayor, a mister Zachary Bullock. The Bullocks have fluctuated between influential and forgotten since 2003. With their new mayor, they have found themselves boosted upon the food chain. The Killigans happily assist them in their rising in power.

The Saint-Clair’s - The Saint Clair’s are on the bottom of Tophets hierarchy. The Saint-Clair’s began with an Elizabeth Saint-Clair, who was kicked out of her home by her husband after becoming pregnant by another man, the Saint Clair’s are infamous for doing one thing and one thing only, screwing up important events. The Saint Clair’s generally associates themselves with investigating crimes in Tophet, and by all accounts have had a rough time with it. With the Black Rose Slayer and Diablo, two serial killers were able to slaughter children, much to the misfortune of this family. However, the family had gain some respect by assisting in the murder of Diablo. However, they are still known as the “disgrace” of Tophet. There are still several Saint Clair’s that are attempting to justify themselves and keep Tophet safe, some of them in less ethical means.

The Mendel family - No one in Tophet truly paid mind to the Mendels. They had always been a quiet group of people, always polite but never social. Alfred Mendel had accompanied his father to Tophet in the Summer of Love, where his father proceeded to abuse him but keep his social status quiet throughout the down. Mendel had planned the abduction of the children for years, and had even adopted a child before hand to attempt to see if he could bring himself to harm a child he had grown attached too. He could not, and rather raised the child away from the other abducted children. That child, who has not been seen in Tophet, or rather, may have changed their name, was much too young for Mendel's twisted goals and was saved the trouble of abuse. It is assumed the Mendel family tree has been rightfully ended.

The Seaside Manor Inn comes equipped with twelve rooms, a singular ballroom, and a dining hall. Only the richer of the tourists can make their way into the Seaside Manor.

Tophet's infamous "Free Fall." This cliff has been known for several odd disappearances within the town's past and is the known area for the accidental deaths of several tourists. It still remains a popular tourist attraction, for the legend of being able to see Diablo's body floating in the water. This is a popular destination on most tours, and has been known for what the residences of the town like to call "teenage recreation and procreation."

The mayor's office leftover from the beginning of Tophet's history. It has room for at least ten residents, but only tends to contain the singular mayor and is family. As of right now, it is being run over by a small branch of the Bullock's. It is heavily protected and it is only to be visited by those who gain a political entry, or are invited by the Bullock's themselves. Rumors speculate that David Cyrus can still be seen in the main office, smoking a cigar and happily tracing out plans for Tophet's financial future.

Tophet's historical museum, where the small historical center is set. On the other half of the small building is an aquarium, filled with New England animals such as lobsters, and not to forget Tophet's mascot, Hiccup the Otter.

A fascinating part of Tophet's history is the acceptance of all, and thus is born their religious center. Now the odd piece of Tophet, having had these accepting roots, is that they believe the ceremonies should not have a singular leader. Thus, there are no priests, no rabbis, no spiritual guidances within Tophet. For that reason, many of those who worship tend to drive to Dover, rather than practicing in Tophet. This religious center is used, however, for charities and political rallies.

Tophet's docks. A lot of tourists can chose to go boating or even whale sighting if they go out far enough into the water. These docks connect straight into the main part of town, where the Summer of Love celebration is occurring.
