Bartering is the most widespread form of exchange. Sadly, bottlecaps are taken, so let's use poker chips instead!
I hadn't thought about this before so I'm glad you asked.
The Currency should be something that perhaps is commonly found in water, but isn't too rare, but not to hard to get. Some form of trash. Poker chips seem a bit rare ;p

Character Name:
Robert Davison
Age:
29
Class:
Trader/Engineer
Affiliation:
Enterprise Coalition
Personality:
Embodying all of the traits that define the Enterprise Coalition - pride, ruthlessness, and a lust for power- Davison is a force to be reckoned with. He craves attention from the masses, ensuring that his brand is known to everyone. Competition is little more than an insult to him. Despite this, he is charismatic in personal conversation, wearing the mask of hospitality and friendliness when he is unsure of a newcomer. Beyond that, he is deeply distrusting of others. A deep sense of melancholy follows him at seemingly random intervals.
History:
Long before the Deluge, Davison was nothing more than a simple mechanic who worked each day for wealthier clients. It was a family affair, as his father and grandfather did the same thing for nearly their entire lives. Over the years, his business expanded into selling redesigned vehicle parts, which raised technical performance greatly. Robert purchased a small factory to meet increasing demand, further launching his company toward success. Standing alongside him at the time was his doting wife, a youthful and compassionate soul who balanced out Robert's darker tendencies. They were an unbreakable couple.

In his spare time, Robert bought and managed his own radio talk show. It found a nationwide audience and Davison Industries was a household name shortly thereafter. The talk show focused on current events, where detailing of huge storms and riots kept people listening for updates. Then, the Deluge struck, closing off the city from the rest of the world. Robert was amazed to see survivors clamoring for parts and supplies, and his business was reborn. It only made sense to tag along with the Coalition for protecting everything he owned. However, his wife fell victim to a bomb that was intended to kill him. The attack was linked to NPR operatives.

A thirst for vengeance swept over Robert, and he quickly spearheaded the Coalition's war effort against the New People's Republic. His private army knew nothing of mercy. Arms dealing was soon incorporated into his company, making him one of the most powerful men in the flooded New York City. The only thing stifling his ambition was pure wrath. Not one to completely abandon empathy, however, he adopted an orphan boy that was caught as a stowaway in his private boat. The child's bravery impressed him, and Robert took the boy as his heir.

@Uncle Legens Legentis
What about soda/beer can tabs? If you wanted to include bottle caps too, those could be like a larger sum... 10 soda tabs = 1 bottle cap?

EDIT: Also, what's religion like in this world? Have people lost faith in the monogamous "God" that faiths such as Christianity/Judaism follow? Are polygamous laws more popular now? Has a sea/water-related faith sprung from the depths (pun intended)?

Character Name: People know him only as Charon
Appearance:
post-apocalyptic-3.jpg

Age (16-30): 30
Class (you can choose two): Scavenger and Explorer
Affiliation: Neutral
Personality: Charon is a mysterious man. An entity, really. He reveals little about himself, but he is seen as a man willing to do anything for the simple price of a Favor. His Favors are enigmatic, and his motives are unclear. He is simply the Ferryman, willing to transport anyone or anything anywhere.
History (two paragraphs minimum): Charon has seemingly been in New York forever. Some say he was a child of the Deluge, a bonafide son of the sea. One day he simply showed up, a sixteen year old in a Coast Guard boat with a small toddler on board. He has been sailing the waters of the city for years. He knows them, and the monstrous inhabitants, very well. He began his trade as a transporter of goods, but soon moved on to transporting anyone and anything anywhere in the city. If you need to get somewhere, Charon is a neutral party. He is also so popular because he does not charge poker chips, or food, or anything. He works in Favors.

Charon's Favors are rather notorious. They can involve anything from helping him maintain his boat, to assisting him in wiping out a pack of mutants, to even kidnapping someone. You may ride on Charon's Ferry whenever you want. But the cost may be more than you can bear. And yet, with safe travel becoming more and more difficult, and thanks to the neutrality Charon enjoys, and his usefulness to all three factions, Charon remains popular. At night, you can hear his Ferry gliding through the polluted waters, a playlist of eerie jazz music as he awaits his next passenger.
Gear (must relate to your class choice): Charon has a boat, a .50 cal machine gun on his boat, a pistol and a long scythe as his weapons, a few flares, plenty of food and water for a week's journey at any time, ammunition, cigarettes, pornographic magazines, and alcohol for the enjoyment of his passengers, and hand drawn collections of maps of the city.
Boat: Charon's Ferry, a US Coast Guard vessel that Charon owns.

Extra (optional): Charon's assistant is a tall, silent individual known as Gorn. Gorn wears a sack over his face, and is the loyal servant of Charon. He mans the machine gun. He is Charon's enforcer who goes off to collect Charon's Favors. He's a dark, ghastly individual whose skin is covered in burns and scars. He wields two woodcutter's axes and a shotgun.

I feel like it shouldn't be something that's easily just found in the water. Wouldn't that just end up in massive inflation because everyone has relatively easy access to it? Also currency could vary depending on how isolated each area was when they were established

I don't mean it to be easily accessible to the point of inflation but like bottlecaps, they are common enough to be easily used by a society and aren't easily made.

In this sort of tech age, someone can mimic making bottle caps or soda tips.

I feel like the currency could vary depending on the faction.

The capitalist scum/American government remnant could use old US currency still.

The communists could just not have currency and rely on the initiative of the common man to get things done or something. Maybe get like certificates or something they can redeem for goods and services.

So I mean we don't necessarily have to abolish old world currencies. The rarity of these following an apocalypse could also help the problem of people making more of it or whatever. Typing on mobile while waiting for pizza so I can't spill all my thoughts but hey here ya go.

Excuse me, but quick question.

Will a sort of scientist be under the class of Medic or Explorer?

@Ryeniumine : I'm not sure if this'll help, but here's my two-say.

If the type of science is a life (ex. Biologist or Botanist), then I'd assume medic.

If the type of science is physical (ex. Physicist, Coding) then I'd assume engineer.

If it's anything else that doesn't necessarily make sense (ex. Marine Biologist, but maybe your character focuses on simply documenting the different things like a journalist, instead of studying the anatomy/why everything is mutated) then maybe I'd assume explorer.

All in all, it depends on the science, followed by what your characters goals using that field of expertise are.

Thanks a lot! I'll be able to post my character sheet now. ^w^

Name: Jane Myros

Age: 25

Class: Medic/Soldier

Affiliation: Empire State Alliance

Appearance beneath the helm:

She has unusually fuschia-colored eyes, her black hair is cut into a straight bob, and bears a lightly tanned skin.

Personality:

Jane is a curious and skeptic individual whose beliefs tend to change over time due to the experiences she obtained and from the people she interacted with. Though one thing hasn't changed from her: she will not hesitate to do questionable choices for the greater good, even if it places others in jeopardy. Therefore, being trustworthy isn't really a kind of trait she's fond of.

She is obedient to her superiors within her assigned militia, and has shown great skill in combat and weaponry. Moreover, she is also a scientist and continues to research and study the world around her. She juggles between her dual lives constantly, but her goal never wavers.

To protect what's left of Earth and to find a solution to the problem the Deluge has brought.

History:

Jane actually grew up within the luxurious comfort of her parents' penthouse residing in the most finest skyscrapers the Coalition has to offer. She is the only heiress to her family's business, but she made her decision to not become a beneficiary after seeing the corruption rooting deep and deeper within the Enterprise. Jane chose instead to join the military in the Empire State Alliance, despite the waging bad blood between the factions.

She believed that the world wouldn't have suffered the fate the Deluge has brought, if many were to put their focus on addressing Mother Nature's issue in the first place. Her knowledge of the history of the Earth, pre-Deluge and post-Deluge, are one of the factors that made her pursue the opportunity to study further the environment and protect what's left of it as the Earth continuously submerges and evolves.

Gear:

• Pistol silencer
• Utility belt (with ammo and pockets)
• Bayonet
• Grappling hook gun (with rope attached to belt)
• Hand gun
• Assault rifle
• Two-way radio and a digital armband (complete with user interface) the latest Alliance military technology has to offer.
• In most times: a lightweight field microscope, syringes, plastic vials, and a portable medical kit. Storage for these are her utility belt pockets.

Boat:

A modified jet ski, specially made for the military with the latest technology. Fast, agile, discreet, and can even operate in extremely shallow waters.

@Ryeniumine Would it be okay if Jane and My character knew each other? They're both medics so they have probably worked together before. And Lucy being an Explorer that would be useless in planning out new routes for the soldiers to go in case of an attack or something

My sincere apologies for vanishing for a few days. Things have kept me busy, but I am happy to answer your questions.

1. I like tabs in place of caps. Much as I love Fallout, I don't want to borrow too much from it.
2. Religion varies from place to place. The Alliance is mostly Christian, the Republic is non-religious, the Coalition is spiritualist (without any strict religion) and the Territory is a mix of everything.

Age:
30
Class: Engineer/Trader subclasses in explosive work and info broker
Affiliation:

Enterprise Coalition

Personality:
Ron is a complicated soul on one hand he may come over as just wanting money and power and the good life, but he doesn't let many know the true he because he often finds that people don't take very well to being overly forward and such in a lot of cases.

Sometimes an workaholic and it causes him to be grumpy at times from lack of sleep , he's also almost been caught putting his noise where it doesn't belong in the past but some how has the devils luck. He has his own way of showing affection to those he cares about and can adapt to many a situation.

Some say he spoils those he cares about and when they do get to know him and has a heart of gold, but the truth is he's not always nice and kind has been known to get his revenge in the most brutal and unexpected ways.
He also likes to test people sometimes it's a good kind of test sometimes it's indifferent and sometimes he does it just to fuck with their heads more so when they are pissing him off.

One that knows ron can tell what mood he's in by the way his eyes lighten or darken or slightly mannerism that he displays. Given his personality he's both feared and hated and not trusted and trusted and loved and or and like.
Yes it's a contradiction but for ron things can sway very fast so he does his best to keep a plan somewhere in his mind.

Knowing that he would lose the one thing he cared about, on the side of army work he took a job from some seriously questionable guys and started to make bombs and such.

It didn't stop there his fame got him more jobs from their friends. He grew to hate himself as a teen and even a young adult, so as soon as the debt was payed he started told them never to contact him again and he hopes it stays that way.
These days he uses the blood money to help people that were like him in secret, he prefers not to use bombs and chemicals since those days if can be helped but won't hesitate if need be. After his final mission at the age of twenty he got honorably discharged and decided to play his hand at info brooking since we would need more money and place to stay. With the little money he earned he moved to the Enterprise Coalition many of his old friends called him a traitor, like the killings it hurt for a while but he got over it and made a name for himself over the next three years and then parted on favorable terms . He now owns a company called the lovable grumpy dragon given his personality at times.

Boat:
It's a medium fortress and home away from home, it looks some what like a blue whale because of the shape and the armour, it has four guns of thirty five cal two on the front and two on the back, this makes it hard to push off and move in shallow waters.
Extra:
Loves gardening making reading and cooking and finding out about people make home made traps and bombs. Does not take to very kindly intimidation and if anything he will consider turning you into fish food with one of his complex wire traps and such.
He likes talking to interesting people hates annoying or and arrogant people mostly likely charge them extra for not having any restraint or manners.

Owns a specialized titanium wire composite cross bow given to him by his sister abbby before he lost contact with her , has several types of arrows barbed poison explosive and armour piercing and cryo arrows but it's hard to make the cryo and explosive arrows so his stock is limited.
He owns a custom duel linked shot gun from his mother, which can fire amour piercing and explosive shells and such can't fire stuff that would make it explode. Grenades smoke normal C4 limited as well as limited other explosive supplies.

Seeds and herbs and spices in small to medium jars and dried rations, purifier tablets in case he's out and about and needs to refill his water canteen. dried fruit to keep his sugar levels up.
Campers back pack with tent and sleeping bag and medium medical kit, special reinforced gloves for climbing special mesh socks for climbing. Caveralar Vest he kept from his army days has served him well so far.
Goal: To find a safer way to use explosives for workers and find his sister
