She watched, unblinking almost. The glare was strong as she flicked the ashes from her cigarette. Her frustration and anger towards this guy wouldn't be leaving anytime soon. Taking another drag she exhaled only from her nose as she clenched her jaw. The man just stood there for a little bit, looking back at her before taking some things out of the car and slowly approaching. Taking one final drag Laila flicked her cigarette aside before standing up as the green haired guy approached her. Folding her arms across her chest she exhaled the cloud of smoke before clenching her jaw again. Pale blue eyes studying the face before her. He spoke monotonously and she listened, her eyes following his actions as she eyed the joint in his hand. Exhaling sharply and visibly through flared nostrils she remained silent, eyes once again practically unblinking.
"If you can't drive then don't. You're lucky you just hit a bike and not a person." Her words were low, with a hint of a rasp in her voice. Pale blue irises flicked to the joint then back to him.
"I don't want your drugs and damn straight you're paying for the damages you caused." She almost spat her response as she took a deep breath and looked away closing her eyes for a moment she swallowed back before returning her attention to him.
"Try not to kill anyone while you're on the road." Laila spoke simply and turned around to walk away.
There were times where being relaxed, chill and nonchalant were okay this wasn't one of them at least not for Laila. If this guy was some stoner that didn't give a damn then he
really needed to take a moment and realize the damage his actions could
actually cause. Sighing heavily as she walked on, she pinched the bridge of her nose and growled at herself. She wasn't sure if she was more angry at the guy hitting her bike, or just
how much he didn't seem to give a damn. A few more deep, calming breaths escaped her as she did her best to calm herself. When her anger was sudden and out of nowhere she always found herself struggling to relax and calm down. Her best option typically seemed to be removing herself from whatever the situation may be and allowing herself to simmer down, no interactions, no thoughts about anything, just pacing and breathing.
Continuing on off towards the side away from the entrance closest to the offices she kept narrowed eyes on the road ahead. Her hands tightly gripped at her arms, jaw tense. Her breaths sounding harsh as they came out of her nose. Clearing her throat she watched the other students walk around, some looking at the school in awe others buried in their maps and phones. Reaching for her phone in her pocket Laila stumbled on her path. Straightening herself up she glared down towards the ground with bared teeth. A large branch was strewn across the grass. Narrowing her eyes in confusion she turned to look over her left shoulder, she could see the cracked and broken part of the tree where the branch had come from. Cocking her head to the right she stood up straight before looking back to the branch on the ground, taking hold of the large chunk of wood she picked it up and moved it closer to the tree. At least this way it was less out of the way, which meant people were less likely to trip over it. Walking away she dusted her hands off; the sound of shuffling and rustling entered her ears. Confusion came across Laila's face as she cocked a dark brow and fully turned to look up into the tree. So
someone had knocked the branch off.
Looking around in the branches the confusion remained on her face.
"Hello?" She called out.
Rhu noticed the girl under the tree. She said something that she couldn't quite make out from her angle. She adjusted herself so she was more visible to the girl and waved.
Out of the branches and leaves a figure appeared, a young woman with dark hair and a small frame. She waved towards Laila which had the brunettes brow rising as she stood in a spot where she could easily see her.
"Hi." Laila's arms stayed crossed over her chest.
"Uh...are you alright up there?" She asked.
"I mean...I tripped over the broken branch" she looked towards it
"but I didn't know what the cause of it might've been." Pointing towards the tree she chuckled awkwardly.
"Now I do." a shrug came from the woman.
"Well...umm...enjoy...I guess. Didn't mean to bother you." She started to back away from the tree.
Rhu slowly nodded when she asked if she was alright. But when the other woman began to walk away she quickly changed her mind. Better to be laughed at and get help than be stuck here all day. Not knowing how to get her attention back Rhu began shaking the branches around her and making noise. When she got her attention Rhu began to sign to ask for help and realized it was unlikely this other person knew sign language.
Watching the girl she smiled softly with a nod until the branches and leaves began to rustle and shake. The confusion grew further as Laila's brows furrowed. She stopped where she stood and watched the girl start to do things with her hands. Pale blue eyes were unsure what to make of the situation as she shook her head slightly and moved closer.
"I'm not sure what you're doing..." She spoke in confusion.
"Do you need help? Can you explain to me what you're trying to say?" Laila made a worried face as she looked around before stepping a little closer to the tree.
Rhu nodded when asked if she needed help. She pointed to the ground and shook her head. Hopefully that would be enough to convey that she couldn't get down.
Watching the actions from the other woman, Laila grew more confused. She had pointed to the ground and shook her head. Making a face with a shrug the brunette shook her head.
"Okay...so you need help?" She nodded slowly attempting to decipher the charades she was being given.
"But You don't like the grass? You don't like the ground? Uh...you don't wanna get down?" She asked more questions as she moved closer.
"What do you need help with then?" Laila sighed as she looked around the tree.
"Do you need me to give you something? Do you have a bag down here?" Her confusion carried on as she shrugged, palms up.
"How about we get you down and then whatever you're looking for I'll help with?" In truth Laila didn't really know what this girl was looking for or what she needed, she was working based on her assumptions and apparently horrible charade deciphering skills.
"Uhh..." She looked up and started walking around the tree to see if there was somewhere lower she could step. Coming back around she looked up at the woman again.
"You could maybe hang from a branch and I can grab you and lower you, or...umm...you could jump?" She was unsure of that one.
"And maybe I can catch you." She grimaced at the idea. At least she could break the fall if that was what ended up happening. It would hurt less for her than the girl in the tree.
Great. She was going to help her down. Even though she didn't know what she needed help with. Rhu looked down. Although the person helping was fairly tall, Rhu was also quite far up. But it wouldn't hurt to try hanging down and seeing if that would lower her down enough. Rhu carefully swung down so she was hanging by her arms, making sure not to hit the other girl in the head. Her toes hung just in line with her forehead. It would be possible for the other girl to grab her but...it would also be awkward.
maybe next time I won't climb so high Rhu thought to herself.
Ducking out of the way of the girl lowering herself Laila approached the dangling woman and reached up. Exhaling in frustration as she couldn't comfortably reach any section of the girl that would make this easier she sighed.
"Alright, the only thing we can do here is for you to let go and I have to catch you. Worse case scenario I break your fall." She spoke simply.
Rhu's eyes widened at Laila's suggestion and then vigorously shook her head. She was not going to let go.
Exhaling the brunette closed her eyes and shook her head.
"I don't know what else we can do..." She stated simply with a shrug as she looked at the other.
Rhu readjusted her grip. She noticed the tall funnily dressed person she saw earlier and used her foot to point at him.
Following the small movement of the other's foot Laila glanced towards the man that she assumed was being pointed at.
"Maybe you could've thrown a branch at him if you wanted his help." She spoke rather bluntly and cleared her throat before standing straight, folding her arms across her chest she looked in the direction of the oddly dressed man.
"Hey you!" She called out and glanced up at the dangling girl. Staying close enough that if she let go, Laila could react, she turned her attention back to the man.
"Apparently trying to be a good Samaritan doesn't work here unless you're shirtless. She won't take my help, so maybe she'll take yours, since she seems to be asking for it." The bluntness continued from Laila as she swallowed back. She had been trying to help, it obviously wasn't wanted so once he got close enough she would let the two do as they pleased.
So much for trying to be the good guy. She looked away in annoyance as she waited.
Rhu had obviously upset the girl though she didn't know why. She readjusted her grip again. Hopefully when she got on the floor she'd be able to explain herself better. Her notebook was in her bag, which would allow her to communicate easier.
Taking a moment to snap from his thoughts and glance around for the source of the voice, Aiden found himself making brief eye contact with an, admittedly attractive, well built young woman.
She could definitely kick my ass any day of the week… he thought to himself as he strode over,
Fuck, I'd probably let her… A devious smirk flashing on his face before he noticed a pair of legs, dangling from the tree next to her. His gaze trailed upwards with a puzzled expression before locking eyes with another girl. The pieces clicked together as he reached the two. The one in the tree can't get down alone, and the one on the ground is not tall enough to help. He took off his hat with a flourish and gave an exaggerated bow,
"How might I be of service to you?" he said as he tilted his head up at Laila from his bow, a bit of a cocky grin on his face.
"I guess you didn't pay attention to everything I said." Laila spoke casually towards the seemingly cocky man that had approached.
"You're not serving me. You're serving her." She pointed to the dangling girl.
"She needs help getting down. You've got the reach, and apparently you look more trustworthy than I do." Laila shrugged.
"So, good luck." Turning to look at the girl in the tree the brunette nodded towards her.
"Sorry I wasn't good enough." She clenched her jaw before looking towards the man once more and turning to walk away. She had tried to help, she apparently couldn't be trusted and thus couldn't perform well enough. Sighing she shook her head. Laila wanted to get
rid of the anger, not fuel it and make it grow even more. Another harsh exhale escaped her as she visibly sighed heavily, her whole torso rising and falling with the breath. Gritting her teeth she growled at herself.
Confused by the girl's irritation, he set his hat on the ground before looking up at the one in the tree.
"How's the view up there?" He said with a grin in attempt to lighten the mood a bit.
"See anything you like?" he winked then chuckled to himself,
"I'm kidding." he reached up to grab her sides stopping before touching her, waiting for a sign that this was acceptable.
"Lets get you down from there, shall we?" Rhu gave a slight nod as he reached up to grab her and readjusted her hands again slightly. Her arms were getting tired. He grabbed her sides carefully, bracing himself for her weight. Rhu hesitated slightly, readjusting her grip on the branch again. Then she took a deep breath and let go. He brought her down slowly, careful not to freak her out too much, then let go.
"There we go." he said with a smile,
"Now you probably shouldn't climb any more trees that you can't get out of, hun." he tapped her nose lightly with his finger,
"You'll break a leg, and not in a good way."
Rhu frowned and slapped his hand away. She did not like being treated like a child. She then turned and picked up her bag off the ground and pulled out a notebook,
"My name is Rhu. Thanks for helping me. Sorry I can't talk I am deaf (but I can read lips pretty well). Sorry that I didn't trust you to catch me, I didn't want to hurt you." Rhu gently tapped Laila on the shoulder and showed her what she had written.
Smooth... a voice echoed in his head.
The smile wiped from his face and picked his hat off the ground, dusting off the brim and placing it back on his head. He then swiftly tried to catch up with the two. There was no way in Hell he was going to let the first people he met here leave with a bad impression of him.
As she walked towards the building, Laila's whole body was tense, knuckles white as her fists were clenched shut. Shaking her head she scoffed. Why was she letting this bother her so much? Why was she so upset that one tiny girl didn't think she was good enough to help her and some tall ass, half naked dude, who really hadn't done anything wrong, was? It made sense. He could reach up and she couldn't, simple as that but the rage in her blood was not allowing her to accept this. Another irritated growl escaped her as she shook her head again in frustration.
"Fucking stupid." She muttered to herself as she felt something on her shoulder. Stopping she stood straight and glanced over her shoulder with a snarl. Pale blue eyes littered with flecks of reddish-orange. Flaring her nostrils she huffed and turned around.
The shirtless guy wasn't far behind the now visibly petite woman in front of her. There was a notebook in her hands, a page open and pointed at her. Raising a brow Laila unintentionally glared at the girl before taking the book in her hand and reading what was scrawled out for her. Her eyes scanned the page quickly as her features softened. Swallowing back she blinked a few times while looking away before her attention returned to
Rhu. Her irises were clear of the anger that had been swelling inside her. Handing the notebook back she nodded to the girl before looking up at the guy and clearing her throat.
"You have nothing to apologize for. Neither of you have done anything wrong. I get worked up easily, I overreacted." She explained and swallowed back.
"I'm Laila." She put a hand out for a shake, her eyes flicking to the top hat wearing guy then back to Rhu.
Aiden let out a sigh
"I'm glad you say that. I was a bit worried I did something stupid and forgot about it ... again..." he grinned sheepishly and scratched the back of his head. Curiosity getting the better of him, he glanced at the notebook.
So she's deaf... she probably doesn't even notice I followed her to apologize... He casually tried to position himself in a spot within her eyesight.
"Oh... I'm Aiden. Very pleased to meet both of you." he said with a wink.
Rhu turned to a new page in her notebook,
"It's nice to meet you guys too. Laila, are you going to the dorms? Do you mind showing me where they are?" She held it out for them to see, making sure that it was in a position where both of them could read it easily.
"Depending on my mood I usually tell people where they've fucked up. If I'm pissed I try to avoid confrontation all together. Things get outta hand quickly in those situations." She told the shirtless guy, Aiden.
"Nice to meet you." Nodding towards him Laila then returned her attention to the new note on the page. Looking at Rhu she nodded.
"Uh—Yeah. I mean I was going to go to the principals office but they're probably not even there, first day and all. To be honest, I have no idea where the dorms are so...I guess we'll be looking together?" She shrugged with a raised brow.
"Sounds like a plan to me." he looked at Rhu, waiting for her response.
Rhu nodded in agreement.
"That sounds fine to me."
"Uhh...okay, great. Let's see if we can find these dorms." Laila spoke as she looked between the two.
