Hinata was born in the village of Shamsmura, not more than a couple of hours walk from Ba Sing Se. It wasn't a very large village, known mostly for its rice fields. What many didn't know was that it also secretly trained youngsters in earth bending, martial arts, swordplay and archery. They were in fact underground rebels who wished to overthrow the now corrupt Dai Li and whom they perceived as a rather useless king.
As for Hinata, she wasn't actually trained for any such thing. She was the seventh of twelve children, growing up in a family of farmers who worked in the rice fields. It was a busy life filled with hard work, but it was the norm and there was no lack of company when you lived with so many siblings. In fact, even at a young age Hinata would head to her eldest brother's forge for some peace and quiet. He was the village blacksmith, even though it wasn't what their parents had wished for him. Hinata wasn't allowed to apprentice under her older brother, so she worked in the fields like the rest of her siblings. Whilst there, she realized that there she barely needed any effort in moving any obstructing soil or rocks out of the way. Her curiosity led her discovering that she could easily move dirt, sand, rocks and dust without actually using her hands. Her parents did not find out until one day when she forcefully used her earth-bending to push away a large boulder that had rolled down a hill and crashed into the wall of their house.
Whilst stubborn, her parents seemed to realize now that perhaps Hinata's future wasn't in farming. However, they kept this bending a secret, not wishing for her to get caught up with the rebel trainers. She would spend her days instead learning how to use this power she had with an older earth-bender in the village, Shahir, a family friend who could be trusted. Along with those lessons, she also started learning how to use a multitude of weapons with her older brother, though the ones she liked to use the most was a one-edged sword sword and a bow. It was at his smithy where that she learned to forge her own sword.
Once she was old enough, about eighteen years or so, Hinata decided it was time to actually start putting all she had learned into practice. Her parents were most opposing as was her teacher, but she was always a stubborn sort of girl. When it was clear she wouldn't be getting their permission, Hinata packed her bare necessities, 'borrowed' money from her siblings and headed out in the dead of the night.
She was only there for a couple of days when the siege took place, rather by surprise. While it turned out she didn't do any attacking, she decided to use her power as well as common sense in keeping people safe, especially the lower class citizens in the Lower Ring of the grand city. This was an affair that took quite a while, until eventually a month passed when Hinata even thought of returning home. Something kept her from doing so, however, and so aside from some letters, she remained for the time being in the Capital of the Earth Kingdom.
