' background '
marisol had lived on her "own" for the majority of her life. she moved from place to place in the city of santa fe, new mexico. truth be told, distant family members and family friends allowed her to stay with them, treated her like she was a tenant who couldn't pay. she had to take care of herself, growing up too fast, becoming a little too while, and all of a sudden... she was no longer allowed to live with them, anyone that she had ever stayed with suddenly closed their doors and refused to let her back in. at the age of fourteen, she was living on the streets and still attempting to go to school. three months later, she was taken in by the police on accounts of trying to pickpocket someone. they found out that she was living on the streets and immediately called cps in hopes of finding a living relative that would take her in. a week after, her uncle came and took her home with him.
with a new home and practically living with a stranger, marisol hadn't changed much and still did everything on her own. she never told him where she was going, what she was doing, or how her grades were in school. she didn't really care, and even though he tried his best to be a little supportive, he realized pretty quickly that he wouldn't get through her walls. they were living together and didn't know each other, it was frustrating for him. after a year, despite him still treating her like a child of his own, he didn't bother trying to ask questions and let her o her own thing. as far as he knew, she was safe and an intelligent kid, she knew what she was going.
when she turned eighteen, she moved out as soon as she could. she had been working at the same diner for the last two years and saved up every penny, only spending her money on the rare occasion that she needed supplies or clothes. officially living on her own, she thrived. she worked however long she needed to, partied, did whatever she wanted, and somehow managed to keep fairly good grades at school.
now at eighteen and the very rare visits from her uncle, she was living like an official adult and thriving. now all she needed to do was graduate.
