Do companions have any function?
Companions roughly equate to a witches familiar in the Universum. Not every world has them, but for those that do, it's usually to aid their Magical Guardian in some way, shape, or form. And speaking of form, they're not limited to a physical form either.

You'll notice that a lot of things in regards to magic I keep intentionally vague-- and that's because I want to leave plenty of room for creativity and player interpretation. Sometimes magic is just magic.

Thank you! I figured it's like a familiar, or one of those guiding inter-dimensional beings...And yes, one of my ideas did involve an entirely spiritual guardian, maybe tied to the person's soul or some such (provided that didn't interfere with the ephithet inscribing/revealing). Still pondering which idea to go for/what kind of character I really wanna make. Maybe I'll just try writing more than one CS, the one you've set up isn't too demanding, and the three sentence vibe check is a cool idea.

Thank ye!! The Vibe Check is a more condensed version of my typical "character audit" in other rp's— folks are absolutely encouraged to elaborate more if they so wish (I'll gobble up any and all lore you present me) but I've been loving smaller CS's lately and exploring them in-game.

And absolutely feel free to mess with soul-based powers or companions; your Epithet will supersede it (and will usually work in conjunction with your powers/companion/abilities.

And be sure to poke me when your CS is finished so I can read through it!!
Poke. Hopefuly I haven't missed anything or made any silly mistakes.
Name: Alice Fawns

Guardian Name: Was given the designation "Magical Girl Pharma" after being employed as a Magical Girl in her home world, was also very often dubbed "Little Pharma" or "Lil' Pharma", by the public and in promotional material.

Magical Epithet: █████████

Appearance: 1, 2, 3
Alice has never been good at picking out people's distinguishing features, but if she had to name two of her own, they'd probably be the same two anyone else would pick – her hair and her eyes, both remnants of cosmetic gene mods inherited from great grandparents she never met.

Alice's hair is naturally paper white but is surprisingly effective at reflecting and diffusing light when hit at just the right angle, essentially highlighting itself with colours from Alice's surroundings.

Though a far more muted effect than the original gene mod of her ancestor, Alice's eyes appear to change colours depending on the lighting and angle they're viewed at, ranging from pale blues and greens to grey-silver or even pinkish shades. When backlit by the AR implant within them, Alice's eyes often appear as a kaleidoscope of muted colours, shifting with the glow of the implant.

As far as her dress sense goes, Alice has a strong preference for comfortable, practical clothing, and almost compulsively dresses to avoid standing out – both as a matter of personal preference and habit borne from necessity. That being said, Alice has had a hard time adjusting to the fashion sense of the World Between, her choice of clothing often causing her to stick out from the crowd when she's not in uniform.

Auric Colours: Blue, Brown, Black

Academic Affiliation: Hollowgarde Academy

3 Sentence Vibe Check: A twitchy young woman of 17 years, who somehow perpetually appears simultaneously exhausted and ready to bolt at a moment's notice, her nature is to inquire into every unknown, though that curiosity has long since been tempered by a fear of the things she might find. Alice comes from a magitech cyberpunk dystopia, one where magical girls play the role of superheroes to the public eye, while simply being another asset for the corporations to exploit behind closed doors. Alice like the vast majority of magical girls from her home world has zero knowledge of more traditional spellcasting methods, instead relying on cybernetics to fulfil a specialised role, in her case the development and conjuration of magitech pharmaceuticals.

Your ideal posting speed: As often as I possibly can, realistically one to three times a week.

Companion: Chipie. Not quite a companion per se, but rather an AI chip, courtesy of the company that once owned Alice, housing a "Mascot" AI whose programming Alice has significantly mutilated. Though for the most part capable of producing little more than garbled nonsense, Chipie's code somehow still clings to life and the AI will on occasion briefly reawaken to varying degrees of lucidity in order to offer Alice advice, praise her for her service to "The Company" or else berate her for betraying it.
Edit: Added "Appearance Notes" section and expanded upon Guardian Name. See sheet I posted on the first page for an unedited version.

Do I look like the sort of person who would specifically remind myself to send Alice's epithet through when I finished the sheet and then immediately forget? No that couldn't be me.

Name: Sun Yuling

Guardian Name: Xiao Kuang Dao

Magical Epithet:

Appearance:

25100e3ec1f1d3f4920e8b44b08c945c.jpg

Auric Colors: Red (primary), Indigo, Black (auxiliary)

Academic Affiliation: Oatharvest

3 Sentence Vibe Check: Yuling is a hot mess, loud and crass and up in everyone's faces in the most annoyingly, adorably, affectionate way. But as Xiao Kuang Dao (the Little Mad Sabre) she's already one of the top sword wielders in Oatharvest, regularly besting even her seniors with a combination of speed, aggression, and the sheer viciousness of her fighting style, "Eight Trigram Madness", which allows her to wield eight swords at the same time with the help of neural-linked servo arms. Her berserker edge comes from her deep thirst for revenge for her family, cut down by lackeys of the Imperial Court.

Your ideal posting speed: Once a week or so.

Questions: ( I will probably have more when I get some sleep and think properly)
1. People plucked from their own worlds into the World Between can freely go back and forth with the Guardian Brooch? Or can students only go back during breaks between semesters?
2. Is the "Guardian Name" a reference to their magical girl persona in the world they came from? If so, do those apply to male characters?
3. Nope I can't think of a third. Brain died.
I'd like to do two characters, one being a female and the other being a male. For the male character I'm considering someone who comes from a world mostly like our own, with all the baggage that entails. No magic, just concrete and dying capitalism. This character has always suspiciously been afraid of things like the "monster" underneath the bed and in the closet? I'll probably want them to be a more adversarial, potentially villainous character with a fair amount of humanity to make them not an asshole.
With all that being said-- would this work?? I want to satisfy all your rules and get this right 😰

Ima get to your questions ina sec (or maybe when I wake up tomorrow 🤣), but I wanted to make sure I got back to ya on this: the answer is yes, but there'll need to be a slight tweak.

There has to be magic on your home world for it to be classified as a "guarded world" and thus it's protection (in the form of Magical Guardians) by the Guardian Sphere. Without it, there'd be no way for them to receive their magical brooch or connect to the World Between because magic simply doesn't exist there. However--100% keep the vibe of our world though; your character doesn't necessarily need to know it exists before becoming a magical guardian!

Mostly the latter, but you know teenagers; they don't listen, so there's a lot of back and forth travel. Trips back home on the weekends are somewhat expected, but its "rule" to stay on campus unless there's a University-given break. It's not harshly enforced, but boot away during the week too often and you'll have the Dpt of Liminal and Extra-planar Spaces breathing down your neck for causing them undue hardship and a mountain of paperwork.

Yes and yes! As all Magical Guardian personas are directly connected to your Epithet (which is inscribed upon your soul), they apply to all characters with a guardian share. In my head I liken them to "Sailor Moon, Sailor Neptune, Tuxedo Mask, etc." I could argue that superhero-names like Spiderman and Iron Man (ones that represent the character and the heart of their ability) would work 100% as well!

Are characters expected to have these personas and freely be able to switch between them at the start, or does the University cultivate this ability? I'm imagining my character late at night in a room with terrible sketches and scraps of fabric trying to figure it out lol

Okie dokie. I'll probably just pm you my character sheet if that's okay!

Oh jeesh, I just noticed this question!! It's entirely up to you. I imagine some characters whose home worlds are exceptionally magical already have some working knowledge, but the Guardian Share magic is definitely to be cultivated in the World Between-- so if your character has never transformed before, that can be done IC --but as GM I still need that info to do some plottin's behind the scenes (even if your character doesn't quite know it yet!!)

I could comb through your sheet going on the long diatribe on something completely innocuous but that'd be mean spirited. Instead I will mention that you read like someone with a lot of experience while the vibe I get from my sheet and most other people's is that we're first years. As someone who knows a guy in fencing, getting the red kind of enraged is the exact opposite of what you want in a sword fight as that leads you to make hot blooded mistakes. I'd also go over the following questions:

What was your characters martial education? Being such a good swordsman you beat your seniors requires you to both be a prodigy and have an extensive education. Having so many swords and your neuro linked arms does help, but concentrating on two weapons is already a mighty difficult task that it takes years of training for duelists to get the hang of. Even then, its typically with a parrying dagger and a sword. Very rarely you get exceptions though with blades the same length (Japan comes to mind).

These aren't unworkable ideas, you just need to think about these. Talk to Rissa about it. Or hey, maybe you already did! ^_^

i was gunna send out comments in one large swathe, but Sun looks good! feel free to answer Poly's questions if it gives you a better grasp on her, but otherwise i'm more than likely going to place her as a 2nd or 3rd year student (which will come with some benefits and costs  but hey, its the price to pay for bein so good 😔)

additionally, everyone with 'black' in their auric colors will have mandated guardian counseling c:

Realised after posting mine that you already said you were making a cyberpunk character. Fortunately, it seems like we ended up taking the genre in very different directions.

Now I'm imagining something like an onboard combat AI in each arm to do most of the processing before coordinating with the main brain. Kind of like what octopuses have going on with the "extra brains" in their arms.
