They Go In
"Fighting fire is just hard, boring work punctuated by sheer terror."

The protection of human life is the first priority for firefighters. In the northern portion of Idaho, the numerous state and national forests are monitored by the Knowlton Wildland Fire Team. The team consists of several components; hotshots, smokejumpers, and aerial firefighting pilots who work in conjunction with local paramedics and officials during fire season in order to prevent loss of life and property. These people go in when everyone else is rushing out.

Rules
  • Effectively communicate with your fellow roleplayers. If there is an issue or if you're struggling to make a post, let us know and we will help you choke slam your writer's block and throw it out a 7th story window.
  • Post length can vary given the situation and what you have to work with, but please try to get at least two solid paragraphs in per post. Proper grammar and spellings should be used. Make sure that you include content in your post that allows for others to build off of it. If it doesn't, then it might as well not exist in the first place.
  • Activity is a must. Should you ghost on the roleplay, your character will be taken over as an NPC, and shall serve as whatever plot device I see fit. Whether they suffer an injury, get killed, or decide that that they no longer wish to be on the team, they will be removed from the roleplay and we will continue on without you.
  • If you know you're gonna be unavailable for a period of time, let us know beforehand and try to find a way to temporarily disengage your character(s) from interaction before you disappear. That way your characters can come back later with minimal difficulty.
  • There are physical tasks that your characters must be able to complete in order to be a smokejumper or hotshot. Please consider this when creating your characters.
  • No perfect characters, your characters can get hurt if they do something stupid or outside the realm of human capability. Put 'Blaze It' in the Other section of your character sheet.
  • The primary focus will be on the firefighting team during the fires. Your main characters will be on the team, your supporting characters will not be.

Roles on the Team

The story will revolve around our fire team; these are the main characters of this roleplay.
  • Aerial firefighters fly aircraft to support ground resources in combating wildfires. They drop retardant and supplies as needed.
  • Hotshots are highly specialized and experienced ground crew of about 20 firefighters that excel in making fire lines by hand. They are somewhat frequently deployed by helicopter to quickly arrive at the fire. They will always have lookouts responsible for watching the fire and ensuring their group's safety. They often travel large distances to provide support on multiple fires. There is a fully trained medic that gets sent out with them, and they all have basic first aide training. Their hotshot certification is tested annually.
  • Smokejumpers are trained to parachute into remote areas in order to combat wildfires using hand tools. They have supplies dropped to them which allow them to stay self-sufficient on a fire for 48 hours. They operate in teams of about six and have to get recertified annually. They all have basic first aide training.

Supporting Cast

These characters flesh out the world that our fire team will interact with and give the story meaning beyond our main characters. These are the people they serve and rely upon to keep doing what they do best. You are welcome to play a few of these as needed.
  • Local residents to the area our team operates in.

GENERAL INFO

Physical Build
Leone has tanned skin and softer facial features, with almond-shaped ash grey eyes that are far more expressive than he realizes. Combine that with his inability to grow out a decent beard or mustache, and the fact that he has dimples when he smiles, and poof, you get a guy who looks halfway decent but not quite making it into the sexy fireman calendar levels of attractive.

He stands at 5'10", has a decent build, and could very easily blend in with a crowd. He has dark brown, borderline black hair that's cut in a simple crew cut... Or more accurately, growing out from the crew cut stage into a little bit of a mess. His knuckles have some faded scars on them. He has a pretty bad burn scar covering the majority of his back, and he takes care to keep it hidden.

Clothing Style
His clothing can best be described as threadbare and worn half to death. He has yet to develop a personal style, often just taking what fits from secondhand stores. He doesn't take much pride in his appearance and tends to see looking halfway nice as a chore. He almost always wears a pair of steel toed boots as he's fairly prone to stubbing his toes around Home Base and got fed up with it.

PEOPLE

Sexuality
He's mostly straight, barring any blackout drunk activities. Drunk Leo doesn't care as long as he isn't going home alone. This is why we do not let Drunk Leo out in public.

Crush
He hasn't really shown much interest in anyone, save for the owner of the bar in town, but that isn't quite a romantic attraction. Rumor has it that he went home with Pablo after a long night out drinking a while back, and his lack of memory on the occasion and Pablo's sense of humor have done nothing to stop it.

Family
Pablo Martinez, brother-at-arms. They've been through the thick of it together, Pablo's probably the only person that knows him inside and out.

Charlotte Lavallais, sister. He has a complicated and fairly tentative relationship with his younger sister, often surprised by her phone calls and fumbling interactions with her.

Seraphine Lebrun, mother. Deceased. He wishes that she could have been there more for him growing up, but that wasn't in her plans and her partying lifestyle was what killed her.

Gabriel Lavallais, father. Alive and well, probably at a casino somewhere flirting with a pretty little thing in a cocktail dress. Leone has a deep anger for the man, seeing that the guy was willing to raise his sister and leave him with his absentee mother.

PERSONA

Personality
Leone is fairly quiet and has a habit of just fading into the background of a scene. He can be a bit awkward when he's unexpectedly pulled into a conversation and his responses are often short and to the point. Pablo has frequently referred to him as the awkward turtle of the base due to his slow to open up nature and almost timid presence. The tough guy soldier is a little shy when it comes to normies, so what. He's really not one for major social functions, though he does enjoy the company of others... In small doses.

He is very critical in his thinking and analysis, and he's good at listening to a lot of people at once. This is why he's the Air Tac Supervisor. He shows a lot more confidence and backbone while he's working. He is an honest person and would never say anything bad about anyone unless it's something that can be worked on or fixed when it gets pointed out. He can have quite a mean streak if someone's actions endanger themselves or others, and he doesn't have patience for anyone that can't be bothered to listen to advice or instruction.

Likes
Rum and coke, drawing, bird watching, flying.

Dislikes
Uppity people, shopping, spending money, overcomplicating things, overcrowded environments.

Mannerisms and Quirks
Leone's posture is always perfect. He usually has some kind of thing to play or mess around with in his hands. He isn't particularly close with anyone on the team and rarely shares much about himself.

Skills
Land navigation, wilderness survival, can fly almost anything, fluent in multiple languages, multi-tasking.

Detriments
Anti-social, smoker, alcoholic tendencies, hypervigilant to a worrying degree, anxiety issues.

BIO

Leone knew exactly where he rated on his mom's priority list, and unfortunately it was not at the top. Growing up, he and his mother moved from house to house for a few months at a time, staying with various questionably distant relatives and bouncing around the US like a plastic bag on the side of the road. His mother fell ill from her hardcore partying lifestyle and was in and out of the hospital a lot towards the end. He learned to make do with what he had, always worried about becoming too much of a burden. When she passed, he landed in an orphanage and requested his last name be changed to Donadieu. He didn't care much for school and was lucky enough to graduate high school by the skin of his teeth.

Even though school wasn't his greatest area of performance, he did score high on his ASFAB testing, which led to him joining the Army. He went straight for the pilot program offered, and with that completed, he pushed himself even further. He volunteered to join the Ranger School and proved himself to be a strong leader. Over the course of his military career, he had been engaged with a girl he'd met at a bar for a couple years, but she ended up passing away due to a long term illness. He was a mess for a good while afterwards, and after a significant injury he was honorably discharged with a Purple Heart.

He spiraled bad once he was back stateside. Pablo, one of his only close friends left from his Army days, suggested taking a DNA test to try and track down some family and build up some support that way, and he gave it a shot. Turns out he had a little sister living in Louisiana. Pablo then conned him into getting his shit together before he would meet his little sister.

Hence why Leone ended up in Fire School. Fortunately his love for actual practical education kept him above the water and his military piloting experience made him a very strong candidate for the Air Tactical Group Supervisor position for the Knowlton Fire Team. He's now held the position for two years, having pulled himself out of his downward spiral for the most part. He still has a few bad habits, but they're kept fairly quiet. His sister reached out to him through the DNA test site, catching him off guard and nuking the timetable he'd been working himself towards.

OTHER

He often speaks with a Cajun French accent.

Height
5'-11"
Weight
199lbs

Role On Team
Smokejumper
Dialogue Color

GENERAL INFO

Physical Build
Martin is 5'11" with light brown hair and plain blue eyes. His hair is long enough to get tied back in a man bun, and when let down it falls in waves. He has a crooked grin and can only quirk one of his eyebrows. He pretty much always has a five o'clock shadow and he can pull it off fairly well. His skin has a nice sun kissed tan. He has a couple scratches and little scars on his face, making him look older and more weathered.

He is noticeably muscular, with broad shoulders and a nice butt which tend to come somewhat standard with the job. He is more built for endurance than speed, often bringing up the tail end of any physical activities looking no worse for wear but never setting any records.

Clothing Style
Like most poisonous animals, Martin wears brightly colored clothing as a warning for others to leave him be... Or more correctly, to challenge people into making his day. His favorites are Hawaiian shirts.

PEOPLE

Sexuality
Chaotic bisexual with notorious commitment issues.

Crush
He flits from one interest to the next.

Family
Emily Murray, mother. She worries a lot about his reckless tendencies.

Daryl Murray, father. He's reluctantly come to accept that Martin is going to do whatever he wants.

He's in loose contact with his six older siblings, who all have taken on arguably riskier jobs than him.

PERSONA

Personality
Martin is clever and quick witted, with a habit of running his mouth with sarcastic quips when he isn't actively working. He is often the first to speak up when someone's getting unrealistic expectations and takes a little bit of joy in poking holes in their dreams. It's moderately entertaining for him. He tends to mess with people until he gets a reaction and is generally known for breaking the tension when tempers start to flare up.

His somewhat loud and obnoxious behavior can sometimes make it difficult for people to take him seriously. He does have his moments, though. He doesn't bother with people he doesn't care about and absolutely will get into a fistfight for the sake of a friend. He is a calm and assertive force in the smokejumper crew. He helps keep everyone steady and at least a little relaxed enroute to a fire. He has a knack for spotting and reading the air around a fire.

Likes
Practical jokes, getting rises out of people, lounging by the pool, working out, jumping out of perfectly good aircraft.

Dislikes
Things being quiet, empty environments, things looking too clean.

Mannerisms and Quirks
Martin always knocks on the side of the plane three times before he jumps.

Skills
Reading people, comedic timing, holding people's attention, jump planning, apologizing.

Detriments
Ruthless, unpredictable, overworking, quick to resort to physical violence, adrenaline junkie.

BIO

Martin came from a loud, busy, and overcrowded home. He was the youngest of six kids and his parents had also taken in his cousins. With the full assortment of Murrays in the household, the loudest tended to get the most attention and he wanted to be in the spotlight. He was never one to back down from a dare and his capacity for shenanigans got him in trouble frequently at school. While his brothers and sisters and cousins all went out to take on significantly high risk jobs such as Alaskan crab fishing, demolition derby driving, motocross racing, and his brother Mike even going so far as to be a rodeo clown... Martin took the safer option of becoming a skydiving instructor.

He was fairly content with his work, but a group of people kept booking jumps with him and they piqued his interest. What with them talking about jumping into wildfires and all, he just couldn't resist getting some more information. The idea of him being able to help out people while still getting his kicks had him hooked and he ended up signing up for Fire School.

He's been a spotter for the smokejumpers at Knowlton for the past seven years, and is less than impressed by the new Air Tac guy. He doesn't like him and doesn't trust him, finding him too quiet and too much of a hard ass outside their usual operations.

OTHER

Frequently gets blamed for almost every shenanigan that occurs at Home Base.

Pablo Martinez

Name:
Pablo Martinez

Nicknames:
Junkyard

Age:
39

Gender:
Male

Occupation:
Chief Aircraft Mechanic

Appearance:
Pablo has brown hair and brown eyes, and has been working on a nice little goatee mustache combo thing. He's 5'8", with a solid muscular build. He has the same military posture as Leone, though he's gotten better at relaxing it. He has some bad burn scars on his arm and side, and notably has a prosthetic leg.

Relatives:
Leone Donadieu, brother-in-arms. The pair share a past and are thick as thieves.

Estranged parents, Emanuele Martinez and Hector Martinez.

Bio:
Pablo was a fairly straight laced kid in an environment that was decidedly not so straight laced. He joined the Army straight out of high school, becoming an aircraft mechanic. He became decent friends with a pilot that everyone called Frenchie, and ended up joining Ranger School with him. The two proved themselves to be quite the force through their training and were assigned to the same unit. He'd been toying with the idea of leaving the Army, but didn't feel right leaving Leone to his own devices following the death of his fiancée.

He was with him when their mission went to shit. Leone saved his life. When they went back stateside, he'd lost track of Leo. After getting his new leg situated he went back to work. He'd gotten himself a comfy job at Knowlton working on the various aircraft the team used while trying to track down leads of where his friend ended up. Once he found him he made sure to keep him close.

Other:
Pablo is the only person at Home Base to ever successfully pull one hungover Leone out of bed and out for a sunrise jog. He is just a bastard like that.

Success is how high you bounce when you hit the bottom.

Anne Marie Tilling

Name:
Anne Marie Tilling

Nicknames:
Tilly

Age:
34

Gender:
Female

Occupation:
Owner and Bartender at Tilly's Tavern

Appearance:
Anne has long brown hair and cool hazel eyes. She's 5'4", with a lean build. She has a few freckles dusting her nose and cheeks. She also has the full array of ear piercings and an Alice in Wonderland themed tattoo sleeve on her right arm.

Relatives:
Her cousin was a hotshot on the team before he busted his ankle, he failed the physical to rejoin.

Bio:
Anne had a fairly normal childhood, made it through school without incident, and her first and only job was working at her mother's bar. Her father passed from a heart attack a few years ago. Her mom left the business to her when she retired and moved to New Mexico. New Mexico sounds like it would be a blast, but Tilly is determined to stick it out and keep the bar alive.

Other:
She's got dirt on everyone in town, having grown up in the rumor mill. The Fire Team has her interest due to the fact that it's made up of people from all over the US. It's her little glimpse of life outside the small town of Knowlton.
