If anyone back in the small town of Abbeville had to guess what Nico would end up doing, most would have happily guessed that the boy would make it big in the sports world. He had a natural talent (and a deep passion) for soccer, so many back in his hometown would have anticipated that the combination of raw talent and love for the sport would have seen him go far. If it didn't, they had no doubt that Nico would have achieved something great with his life. He had been top of all his classes at school, never falling below a B-grade.
Nobody would have guessed or anticipated that the popular, cheerful boy would end up brainwashed and indoctrinated, going as far as to murder his parents to show his allegiance and loyalty to a cult. The boy who had once fainted at the sight of his boyfriend's bloody nose had butchered his parents. If it wasn't for the neighbours' account of Nico running off with a group of masked people, nobody would have dared to believe that the gentle, mild-mannered Nico was behind such a horrendous, bloody and ultimately heartless crime.
Yet, he was, and no expense was spared for a good year trying to track him and the strange group down... only for the case to be dropped when there was very little to go on. Rather than waste time and resources on a cold case, the police inevitably prioritised the cases they could actually solve.
Had he been caught a week or even a month after the crime and imprisoned, there was every chance that Nico could have broken out of the cult's hold on him. Yet, he wasn't caught and, five years on, the indoctrination was all but solidified. He adopted their beliefs, firmly seeing them as brothers and sisters; a family he would happily kill for, as was often required of him. He fully fed into the leader's speeches and promises that they were all now family. He believed in him so much that he was ready to join the others in ending his humanity and becoming like the leader; a vampire. It was always the plan to the man to turn Nico, patiently waiting for his 22nd birthday to do so. Until then, Nico was left as the only human - not that it stopped him from joining in with the 'normal' family activities.
This was his family and he wasn't going to be left out of anything they got up to.
In five years, as his ex-boyfriend tried desperately to search for him, Nico had barely even thought about his old hometown and the friends there. He had severed the bond with it the moment he chose to leave with the 'family'. His old life was in the past and he had no intention of ever going back there to interact with the people from his past life. Hell, he had a new life now; a new life that had given him a new family and a new name. He wasn't Nico anymore, so why would he want to socialise with those who knew him as Nico? It didn't make any sense.
Little did he realise that Eros was closing in on him, having found the home deep in the forests of Tennessee and made the long drive to try and find his friend. Nobody came out too deep into the forest, so keeping guard of the home never struck any of the family as a concern. It was why Nico was currently laid out in a hammock outside of the home, his signature fox mask rested on his stomach as he tried to get some sleep. He loved the family, but sharing a room with one of his 'brothers wasn't that easy; the man kept him awake all night with stories. He didn't need sleep when he was a vampire, but Nico still did - and the others did tend to forget that.
He did jerk awake at the low rumbling of a car engine in the distance, his brows furrowed as he reached for the gun at his side just in case he needed to defend himself. Being the only human left made him the most vulnerable, inevitably, so he had had to learn to handle firearms. Once upon a time, Nico had hated them; now, he was quite happy to shoot anyone who posed a threat to him - or even against those who were perfectly innocent.
